I have a 97 dodge with an automatic 47RE I reacently bought boost/pyro/ and trans temp gauges. I need to no where and what is the best way or place to put the probe for the trans temp gauge. Could someone please help me?

Although some put the temp probe in the trans pan, the place that gives the best information about how the trans is doing at any moment is in the pressure side cooling line that comes out of the front driver's side of the trans. Putting the probe in the cooler line will tell you when the temps first start to rise... instead of waiting for the hot fluid to heat all the oil in the pan. You could FRY the trans before heating all the oil in the pan!

Some buy a special trans line to replace the factory line. It has a fitting in it to mount the probe. I don't know the part number, but I remember it seems pretty expensive to me. I spliced a 1/2 inch plumbing tee into the line using compression fittings. You can mount it either in a 90 degree bend like I did or in a straight part of the line. Use a reducer bushing to mount the probe. The big tee does not restrict flow and allows the fluid to circulate around the probe to give accurate information.

Hope this helps.

There are a couple of ways to look at the situation. I believe the fluid at that location is coming directly from the TC and will be the hottest it should get. The fluid in the pan is probably the coolest. Monitoring the temperature in the pan will tell you how well your cooling system is working.

What I am mostly interested in is a change from normal which I can see readily enough with the sender in the pan. The stock pan doesn't have a port so either way you go will require some modification. I think one of the test ports is acceptable but don't know which one. I think Joe G can tell you about that.

I put mine in one of the test ports located on the passenger side of the transmission, just above the pan. There are two ports, I used the one closest to the front of the truck. I just removed the threaded plug from the test port and screwed in my temp probe. Be prepared to work quickly when removing the threaded plug so that you don't get trans fluid all down your arm.

I have the same year truck as you and bought the line keimmmo and Joe G. are talking about. Works great and was pretty easy to install. Should be DC part # 5011244AA.

If you are going to use a test port, use the one on the side of the body of the transmission. The most forward one is on the second gear (front band) piston. Oil does not flow there in any gear except 2nd. The one in the rear is on the rear band piston. Same problem. The center one is line pressure which will give you a pretty good reading. The cooler line is the best place.

Is this a dealer part number or an after market part number? DC part # 5011244AA.
