I was climbing a fairly steep 4x4 road this weekend. Within a few miles my trans. temp. gauge was at 250. I shut the truck off and parked it. I’m not worried about damage, but, I can’t believe how quick it got that hot. From what I have read 250 is too hot. Is this normal? What can you do to stop it from getting this hot? I have the sender in the line going to the cooler. It was only 65 degrees out.

Any input would be appreciated.

If you have the stock touque converter it will make that much heat in short order. If it is slippery enough put the truck in 4 low (if it is a 4x4), this will reduce the amount of torque giong through the tc and reduce the slippage and heat generation. If it is a 2wd then try holding it in 1st gear to reduce the load. If all this fails then call DTT and get some toys. They really know what they are doing. Hope this helps.

Slippage in the torque converter is the largest source of heat in a transmission. If you were work the truck over rough terrain I am sure ther was a lot of slippage. Upgrading the T/C will probably help keep the temp down. It is claimed that oil will start to breakdown at just under 300 degrees
