Trans 3-4 hunting and torque converter locking in and out

Posting this for a friend of mine... he has a 2000 4x4 3. 42's 4" lift with 305/75/16 bfg all terrain t/a's that shifts into 4 at 45-50 (1700-1800 rpm range) which he things is a little too high, also at around 45-50 it will hunt into and out of OD, not sure if this is lockup he is feeling or not, no MIL light on either. I did search and didn't come up with any definite answers. Thanks again y'all

The shift sequence will depend on acceleration, those high tires will have some effect on shift points. Sounds like he is feeling the TQ lock/unlock. With OD on when the transmission is in 4th gear (OD) TQ will lock above 45 mph. With OD off TQ will lock when transmission is in third gear above 35 mph. bg

Sounds like a locking and unlocking of TC if so you need a noise filter. Will happen in 3rd and 4th at slow speeds let me know if i can help.

You can do the noise filter, or what I did (on my 02). I rewired the APPS ground wire to run sraight to the battery ground. Its the black wire with a yellow tracer coming from the harness on the APPS. Just cut the wire, splice in a section long enough to run to the driver side battery, install a ring lug, and problem solved! I was hesitant to cut the harness, but I am so glad I did!

Ditto for me... . I did what all the threads said to do on mine and what Thunder told you to do worked for me the best.

Just now getting back to this and seeing whats been going on and it seems that it is being caused from the apparent noise in the ground from the APPS, now the question is since i've researched it a little i've found 2 different rewire solutions

one from ATS https://www.atsdiesel.com/PDF/120505/4th%20hunt%2046%2047%20RE.pdf

as well as the one from SunCoast Transmissions http://www.suncoastconverters.com/images/APPS%20ground%20rewire.pdf

are there any plusses or cons on either of the solutions or should they both work just as well. Thanks again

A fellow tdr member posted the suncoast link a little while back, I did the rewire shown in the link and talked about above, and my truck runs great now. Pretty easy to do.

Mine had the hunt reeeel bad, then I did the top fix listed (the one from ATS) and it works great. No more troubles.

wow 3 years with the tc lock unlock problem and now a month without it after following the directions on the ATS fix. i tried the first one but still had the same problem. Then tried the ats one and that worked! thanks again guys for posting the information.
