Archived trans won't downshift ?

My auto trans won't shift into first gear unless you use the gear shifter. The truck is throwing a vechile speed sensor malfunction code, and I was wondering if anybody could tell me if I have a bad throttle position sensor or is my trans about to go out. I also checked the fluid and it looks good. Any help would be appreciated.

Jim - I think if you are getting a bad vech speed sensor code then that is probably the problem. I had the speed sensor go out on a Ford Diesel at work and it made the transmission do the same thing. If I am not mistaken the vech speed sensor is a little black box that is on top of the rear differential. It may just be that it came unplugged or , as in the case of my ford at work, a rock flew up and smashed the connection between the harness and sensor. I read anther thread that said a new sensor is only like $35. You might crawl under and take a look.

The sensor on the differential is for the brake system, the trans has its own output speed sensor on the left side of the extension housing. I have seen them fail more than a couple of times. Are you in the U. P. or the L. P. ? If your in the U. P. you're like 5 minutes from my house, look me up and give me a call tomorrow. Will be home most of the day, just have to run into town before noon to go to the bank, can pick up scanner at work if I know before I go.

I'm no transmission expert by no means but my truck was doing the exact same thing and it was the governor pressure solenoid in the transmission. Pretty simple item to change

Thanks for your suggestions. I just wanted to have a better idea of the problem before the dealer tells me that I need a trans rebuild that cost mega $$$, ( I'm taking my truck in tuesday for a oil leak and I want them to scan the computer to see if it a sensor or someting. ) If it is the trans I think I'll go with DTT, (everyone seems to be happy with theirs. ) I live in the LP.
