Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Overflow Valve Replacement

My son had the truck out for a run on Saturday and it quit. Just quick. Luckily he was able to coast into a gas station. The engine would turn over but no "fire in the hole". Had it towed

home to work on it but I do not have any pressure gauges. Thought the batteries may be the problem, in truck since new, as I had to recharge them. No go. Did not see any codes but the

"check engine" light was on. Dealer found that the transfer pump was shot. Replaced under warranty . Truck would still not start. The injection pump had no output now. This to is being replaced under warranty . :) Tech said strange that there were no codes but he has seen that before. He figures the transfer pump went out some time ago and the injector pump was taking up the slack until it just gave up. Will be getting a fuel pressure gauge now. Has anyone else had this problem? Truck has 141,000 Klm on it. I hope to get it back real soon. Any suggestions for a good fuel pressure gauge setup? Should I monitor the "OUT" side of the fuel filter or the "IN" side?:confused:

I would say that if you are going to monitor only one place, then go post filter. That way, you know exactly what pressure the injection pump is seeing. If you want to watch even closer, you can get a pre filter gauge, or switch between senders with an electrical unit, to monitor the pressure drop across the filter. mine is post filter, and has worked fine. I always like to know exactly what my vp44 is seeing at all times. If the pressure drops, just change the fuel filter as it only costs a few bucks to do it yourself, and if pressures are still low, then your lift pump is weakening.

I would love to get 140k on a vp44. I lost

my first one at 36k and now at 98k I need another one. :{

This is why my secound truck is a 12v.

Transfer Pump/VP44

I've seen the same problem several times before. Dealer finds VP44 is toast and then it is determined the LP is gone as well. This is why there is so much preaching about monitoring LP pressure. It's sad that the VP44 has as bad a rep since the problem in so many cases is preceeded by the LP failure. IOW, keep track of the LP performance and make corrections and you would avoid this scenario.

My truck went to the dealer about the 0216 (injection pump timing failure) code, the most common epitaph for the VP44. They deduced that my LP was weak, running but weak and replaced it. The 0216 code keeps coming back, but they said that the VP tested fine. Still waiting for final signs of death.

A good place to get a FPG is Geno's. I have mine post filter. Just had my 24 V in the shop for low pressure,thought the lift pump was gone. Turns out my sending unit went, Called Geno's to order a replacement . They are sending one no charge,can't beat that had it over 2 years. Geno's has always treated me more than fair, and he is cheaper than a parts store. :cool: :cool: :)

If they tore the VP apart they would probably find the timing piston scored due to lack of lubrication, and perhaps the pulsation dampner broken. But of course they probably can't do this as it is supposed to take some special optical equiptment to set the static timing internally of the VP, and warranty won't accept a dissasembled pump for payment. Hope it does the final death bawl before your out of warranty, if it gets close to being out of warranty and still runs, I would start making alot of noise, or starve it for fuel so it does die for good.

Trust me, I have pondered an assination, but I have 60K before the warranty runs out on the engine. I have faith it will die before the first snow fall. :D

Pumps replaced under warranty

The transfer and injection pumps have been replaced in ole blue under warranty. Runs well. Will have to experiment with crusing speed. Before pumps went out I was getting 23 mpg at 60 mph, no load. On a run today it registered 17. 8. Will get fuel pressure gauges. Should the scale include -ve pressure? Would the injector pump, drawing fuel through a dead transfer pump show up as a vacuum?

canblue,

The injector pump can create a vacuum condition on the intake side but you don't need a gauge that measures that because if you get a gauge, you are accepting that you are never going to let it go below about 5psi on wide open throttle. So, there is no need to get a gauge that will read pelow 0 psig because you want to replace the lift pump long before that happens.
