I took my truck to DD in Las Vegas for a DTT trans + power upgade. They were just about finished setting it up when the tansfer case blew up, as in Big hole in the side of the case.

Has anybody had this happen, or have any idea why it happened?

The snap ring broke about 70000 mi ago and I had it rebuilt. It would occaisionally make a rumbling/grinding noise in reverse.

It was the standard duty TC, being replaced with the HD.

Thanks for any input.

Chain stretch

Pretty much the only way that can happen is if the chain stretches and jumps the sprocket there is not enough clearance between a jumped chain and the case and since the case is aluminum it breaks. The NV241 is a great case but chain stretch will get it every time. What happened to the good ol' NP205 cast iron gear drive? You have a P pump and I have a 205, to bad they could not use both of them. :D :{ :D

Thanks for the reply!

So what would cause the chain to stretch and jump? Bad linkage adjustment or the increased power and dyno runs or just time + bad luck or what?

The truck is stranded in Las Vegas + I'm stranded at home.

I just started hereing, from a friend, about a problem with the standard duty cases actually shearing the housing. The HD has a stronger housing but the real capacity of the tc is the same between them. That is the max capacity is 5555 ftlbs. Check out he specs on dodgeram.org. Look into an atlas II t-case. it is all gear driven and has separate levers for front and rear axles. you can run fwd if you have to or 2lo. It is a cool setup but it isn't cheap.

Check out there site and download the Atlas PFD. I don't know how it would work out in our trucks but it is a direct drop in any NP aplication.

Check it out.
