Well, two weeks ago my snap ring let loose on my t-case. I drove for about 70 miles before I got a new ring and got it fixed. When it broke, I was driving the wife to the emergency room so stopping wasn't an option!

Anyway, I got it together and it ran well for 2 weeks, then on Tuesday night I was moving around the driveway in 4WD after the snow hit here in PA and I heard a loud thud when moving backwards. Put it in forward gear and heard another thud.

Well, I got out of the truck to get the mail and when I walked out of the garage I had a nice red stain all over the fresh snow in my driveway. It looked like something died! Well, something died alright... my t-case. Blew a hole in the side.

I picked up a used case yesterday and threw it in last night.

The bottom line is that those snap rings can do some SERIOUS damage and now I am $550 poorer because of it. I'll be putting a transfer case saver on as soon as they are off of national backorder (I was told Monday!!!).

Sorry, to hear of your t-case troubles but you could eliminate that permanently by installing a 241HD case that does not have the 2 piece output shaft or a much heavier duty and cheaper than a 241HD, the 271 case.

Joe,

Is the HD case a bolt in application or do you have to modify the drive shafts?

I wasn't sure if that was an option and I had to get the truck on the road again the next day so I just put another DLD case in.

I'll keep this in mind if this happens again (man I sure hope it doesn't).

Hopefully if I put the upgraded collar on to replace the rear lock ring it will not happen again.

Thanks!

My 241DHD did the same thing about 3 years ago. The gears walked around and spoiled the entire case. I had mine rebuilt and they could only reuse the case casting - everything else was damaged.
