Hey guys I was looking at a dealership that had all kind of CTD's. I noticed the t-case shifters being different on 98-up trucks, but when I got down to look I found they look the same externally on 97-older trucks. They also both said 241 on them and 272 ratio. So, are these older style shifter different t-cases or are they the same but with a different shifter? I was looking at a 94' and might buy it this afternoon if all goes well. Thanks

I thought the transfer cases were the same with the exception that 2500 with snow plow prep and 3500's got the 241HD and the rest of the 2500's got the 241LD. Someone else should chime in soon...

It is my understanding that it is just the shifters that are different. The linkage on 98' and newer trucks is bolted to the t-case and the older ones are bolted to the underside of the floorboard of the cab..... Good luck, Marc

firemanmarc, you got it reveresed. The '98 and newer trucks have the shifter mounted to the floor pan and the '97 and older use a much more complicated linkage that is mounted to the transmission/t-case. As far as I know the t-cases are the same.

Transfer case differences

The 96 3500 trucks were on restriction for a while due to the 3. 54 axle ratio having enough mechanical leverage to snap the output shaft off if the front wheels were spinning and suddenly came up on pavement or some other high traction surface with the rear end still spinning. Hence the NV 241 DHD transfer case with a larger output shaft and the required larger bearings. This T-case was also included in the snow plow prep package on 2500s but could also be ordered as an option on the 97 and later 2500s. It was the only one you could get sometime later in the 2nd gen era.

The changes to the truck that allowed the NV 5600 to be used required a change to the T-case shifter location in the floor pan which lead to the current setup of the tunnel mounted shift mechanism. The T-case itself is the same.

Spped Sensor Is On T-case On 97 And Older, On Rear Axle 98 And Newer.

Hope This Helps.

Speed sensor

DHawk is correct but there is a plug for the older style to seal the hole. I'm not sure how you could get the speed pickup if you went newer to older though  . Ken Irwin
