The output shaft/flange, for the front drive shaft is so wore out on my 1990, NP205, that I cant keep u-joints in it. I looked into rebuilding the 205, but decided to pick up a used one localy. All went well till it was time to install the new one, thats when I noticed the input shaft on the new 205 is smaller than on my old one. So im wondering what is the best way to fix this. Are there adapters that will reduce down from the Getrag size shaft to the smaller size used on the automatic? Or mabe I can take the shaft out of my old t-case, and swap it with the small one in the new t-case. Its my plow/firewood truck, so it dosnt see much road time, but it needs to be right. Looking for some options. Thanks for any help, Larry

There were different strength versions of the NP205. I suggest that you call Standard Trans & Gear in Fort Worth; they carry parts and also rebuild these cases. 800-std-tran

Ok if I am Reading this right you picked up a 5 sp transfer case (205) and you have a Auto . Yes there is a fix do a google search or even E bay for 23/29 spline adapter slip that on and you should be good to go .

I think he means he has a 5 speed and picked up an auto t-case.

Check and see if there is an adapter available to go from 23-29 splines. Off hand, I don't think so and it would a complete custom unit.

Your other option is gut you existing 5 speed t-case and swap in the parts from the newere one. IIRC, the difference is the input shaft, bearing and bearing pocket. You woul have to replace the imput bearing and race but all the rest of the parts should interchange.

Yes there is a adapter It has been tested to well oer 700 hp and TQ stand's up to a pulling truck just fine I want to say they run about $175. 00 e bay has had them I will look and see if I can find link .

Thanks for the replys, that adapter would be a nice fix. I didnt realize that there were dif strength 205s made. Hope I can make one good t-case out of the two I have. Keep the ideas coming, im learning more about the old beast everyday.

That would be a quick and most cost efficient way, IMO. All the internal parts should be the same, aside the main input shaft... . If you go back through BSWarzli's Ultimate Crew build thread, he's got some pretty detailed break downs on his NP205 when he rebuilt it.....

You could put a new front output shaft in your original 205. I've learned alot from browsing the parts pages HERE. Looks like the 23-29 spline coupler is out of stock, tho.

But to put the new shaft in you have to have the case machined out also and that will end up costing more then just the adapter .
