I know that the following took place 20 years ago, but the experience may still be useful.
Back when I was managing a small fleet of 4x4s, we had a year-old 1982 Dodge Ramcharger Auto stick in low range. It jammed twenty miles from pavement, in the dark. It still drove, but slowly. It took some effort by two way radio to convince the new employee that it was OK to drive it to the highway. (It was his third day on job, and he had just finished 4x4 training. )
What had happened was that the factory had filled the transfer case with 80W-90, when it should have had ATF. Everything was fine for a year. Then the thicker oil didn't get into some tiny passage and lubricate some important thing.
Chrysler bought us a new transfer case. But since then, I have been even more careful than before to put in what the TSM says.
