Along with the differentials, it's time to change the transfer case lubricant. Has anyone used synthetic ATF+ (or Chryco approved alternate)?

Any success? Leakage? Seepage?

Thanks.

Yes,

I'm running synthetic in he transfer case. I believe amsoil.

I think but not sure that the transfer case had synthetic in it from factory starting in 96.

Amsoil as well, no problems. I believe your right on the synthetic from 96' Bill.

Where did you guys get the info about synthetic fluid in the T-Case (from the factory) from '96 on? I have never heard that before.

I had Amsoil synthetic ATF put in my transfer case when I had my South Bend Clutch installed in May 2001. It now has almost 30K miles on it, including around 300 - 400 offroad miles on hunting roads.

I use Amsoil 75W - 90 Gear Lube in mine. Changed it over when I got the truck. Also use it in wife's Grand Cherokee, and in my previous Dakota.

Cooker,

I will have to research to find out exactly where. But I thougth in 96 - 97 TDR publication.

I know it stated that the differentials had synthetic but I as remember the tranfer case was also filled at factory with synthetic (of course the NV4500 had synthetic since its introduction).

Engine would of been regular oil (as recommended by Cummins).

I will try to the confirm tranfer case when I find the correct TDR

I installed the Amsoil brand ATF in my transfer case when the truck had 8,000 miles. It now has 145,000 and recently checked the fluid by oil analysis. It was just fine. Still a real pretty red color too.

I use Red Line synthetic ATF in mine. The only problem I have had and still have is a chattering noise that begins at about 55 to 60 mph and quits at about 70 mph.

B Kirk says he runs 75W 90 gear lube in his. I wonder if that would help with the noise.

Any comments?

I'm thinking of going to 5W30 Mobile One Synthetic. Anyone tried this or comments, good idea, bad?

The reason to try a heavier duty oil is I sometimes have the truck in low-range, 1 or 2nd gear pulling heavy. Loads of logs in wet ground put a lot of stress on the transfer case.

I know that the following took place 20 years ago, but the experience may still be useful.

Back when I was managing a small fleet of 4x4s, we had a year-old 1982 Dodge Ramcharger Auto stick in low range. It jammed twenty miles from pavement, in the dark. It still drove, but slowly. It took some effort by two way radio to convince the new employee that it was OK to drive it to the highway. (It was his third day on job, and he had just finished 4x4 training. )

What had happened was that the factory had filled the transfer case with 80W-90, when it should have had ATF. Everything was fine for a year. Then the thicker oil didn't get into some tiny passage and lubricate some important thing.

Chrysler bought us a new transfer case. But since then, I have been even more careful than before to put in what the TSM says.
