Well, after removing my transfer case rear extension I can only get it about 1/2 in. off before it binds up. Then I read the posts about the 241 HD (which I have). You can't get it off without special tools. I can see the bearing through the seal now that the shaft is removed. Is there a way to just look down and see if the ring is ok. I have that dreaded scraping sound under load. How much end play should there be when I pull on the splined shaft. I would think if I have a bad snap ring the shaft would move in and out alot. BTW; I'm beginning to hate this truck!

snap ring

well guys, I looked down the inspection opening with a mirror and I think I am seeing the snap ring. 2 ends come up on either side and sort of stick up into the opening. Both sides are in the groove. Can I assume the snap ring is intact? If so I did a hell of a lot of work for nothing. I won't mind for piece of mind though. Unless the damn thing leaks. I'll refill the case tomorrow and take it for a test run. The driveshaft carrier bearing would squeal all the time, not just under load, right?
