I tried the forum search method for the last 30 minutes (and found lots of good info in the process) but have not been able to find out the transfer case capacity for my 91. I ordered a manual yesterday, but I'm going to town today to get new fluid for the transmission & t-case. I need to know how much to get & what type oil.

I'm planning to get a 5-30 synthetic for the transmission (3. 5 qrts + 1 extra I learned in my searched this morniing!). Can I use the same oil in the t-case? Does it help to over-fill the t-case like the transmission?

Thanks again for the help. Maybe someday I'll even be able to answer instead of asking the questions!

Depends on your climate, I use 80W-90W. The manual does call for gear oil, not ATF like the newer trucks use, like the guy above. I believe what I use, fell into the Florida type climate bracket. If I remeber right, it held 1. 5 to 2 Qts.

Thanks fella'a.

I'm in Alaska & even when its warm, its not that warm & not for very long. Most of my driving time is in cold or freezing temps. I'd like to try synthetic for this reason, just not sure of the oil type/wt.

i should have stated that was the T-CASE :-laf

It doesn't matter anyway, a 1st gen has a REAL t-case that uses gear lube not ATF like these chain driven aluminum things in the new ones. ;) :D

I would recommend Amsoil Severe Gear 75w90 in the t case and Amsoil MTG 75W90 GL4 in the getrag.

These are high quality synthetics and should perfrom very well in your environment.

RidgeRat:

What ever you put in your Getrag make sure it has the GL4 specification, if it dosn`t have that you will take out the syncros.

Wow thats a pretty good variety of answers!

I was pretty well convinced to use 5-30 in the transmission, but I've always ran 80-90 in the past, so using the 75-90 synthetic seems more logical to me.

I figure there is probably many opinions on this and more than one right answer.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your help.

Not to nit-pick, but that advice is for the NV4500, not the Getrag 360.

Whoops  Sorry, I am used to the NV4500. When I replaced the NV4500 in my truck Standard Gear highly (read HIGHLY) recomended Amsoil MTG 75W90 GL4.

80-90 wt gear oil is all we use in all of our gear transfer cases. Is fine in the winter here but if your woried about oil getting too thick use a synthetic i've been told they stay the same thickness in every temperature. Don't use ATF, That is for the newer aluminum chain driven transforcases.

Oh and don't over fill it, unless you want the T-case to leak.

Did you have one leak? I just overfilled mine, figured since we do that with the trans, why not try the t-case? Am I making a mistake by doing this?

Not sure about the rest of you guys, but my '89 Dodge manual recommends "30W Motor Oil" for the NP205. Been running it for a while and no issues so far. Did they switch the spec to gear oil at some point? Of course, as Ridgerat says, it never gets all that warm here in Alaska.

Speaking of which, where you at Ridgerat? How much you have to worry about synthetics somewhat depends on whether your truck lives in Anchorage or Fairbanks like me.

Howdy rowland! Im in Peterscreek, just north of Anchortown. So not nearly as cold as you guys, but I do spend some time up in Eureka, Cantwell, Peterscreek & other areas where the mercury regularly spends time in the negative numbers.

Just finished changing the transmission oil last night. Used mobile-1 5w-30 synthetic. 4. 5 qrts plus 1 extra of course. I decided on valvaline 75w-90 full synthetic for the t-case, basically because it was one of the only sythetic gear oils I could find around here. I finally received my Dodge owners manual from Automobile Books yesterday, and I was a little disappointed to find that it did not tell the capacity of the t-case. The counterman at Napa said his computer showed ~1. 3 qrts, so I bought 2, but thats not quit enough. I gotta run back to Napa to get more. Best I can remember a NP205 takes 2. 5 qrts. Anyone know for sure before I go back to town???

Thanks, RR.
