Had truck in Low 4 WD briefly, straight line, heavy load ( tailgaiting 4 ton gravel on 10K dump trailer). When done, placed trans in neutral. Moved 4WD selector to 2WD then placed in Park. Noted "service 4WD" alert on gauge panel. No chimes, no other alerts. Did not check for codes. 4 WD position indicator light now not working. At this time, I have no drive or reverse and when placed in Park the trans makes a soft grinding noise and does not lock in or hold truck from drifting. Truck was towed to dealership on rollback and will be "Looked at" on Monday. I am not a motor head but it seems like the problem was centered around the transfer case and I am thinking it is something electrical, like a relay or something? Anybody ever have this happen to them or maybe aware of this problem, recall? I do not think it is the trans but it could be. Thanks in advance for any replies.

I guess you will find out tomorrow. Sounds like the transfer case stopped in Nuetral.

Did you try to shift into 4 hi or back to 4 low, then back to 2wd again?

Yep, I tried to do that. Moved the selector from 4WD HI back to 2WD and also in and out of 4WD LO while in neutral. No dash indicator lights were lit during these attempts which makes me think (hope) it is just something electrical like a fuse or relay. I am not sure how it works but I am assuming that this switch activates solenoids/servos that move gears in and out of use. (?). BUT... even Park position dosnt hold the truck. Had to use Emergency brake to park the truck. I have my fingers crossed. Thanks for the reply. I am amazed that no body else in TDR land has ever has this problem before. Huh... maybe I am breaking new ground then.

Yours is an 08. Don't know if they changed the procedure, but you typically have to be moving for the transfer case gears to get lined up with the axle and trans. Your 4wd indicator sensor light is/should be located in the front axle ergo if it's not moving, it won't illuminate... again, different year than I know, might be somewhere else.

If park won't hold the truck, then either you have 2 issues, or the transfer case is indeed stuck in neutral.

Without knowing if you tried to move the truck after shifting into any/all of the 2wd/4wd selections, just stayed in neutral [trans], I am thinking you missed a step - operator error.

Here's my recent experience. While driving (not in 4WD), the SERV 4WD light came on.

Just back from dealer and I now quote from the service invoice. "Pulled code P2201 FDCM Internal Failure. Replaced Final Drive Control Module and verified repair. " Repaired under warranty.

Hope this helps,

The 3rd Nd 4th gens are not like the 2gen systems

A simple explanation
Operating ranges are selected with a dash mounted shift selector switch. The shift selector switch provides a input to the Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) to indicate the driver's desire to change operating ranges. The TCCM uses this input, along with input from the transfer case mounted mode sensor and information from the vehicle's bus, to determine if a shift is permitted. If the TCCM decides the shift is permitted, the TCCM controls the shift motor, mounted to the exterior of the transfer case, to perform the shift.

There is no axle disconect as used in most year 2nd gen

this is what the switch is doing
Step Resistance Range (ohms) Required Interpretation
A <200 Shorted
B 400-700 NEUTRAL
C 1050-1450 4LO
D 1850-2300 4HI
E 3050-5950 2WD (Default)
F 9. 5-12. 5K In between positions
G >15. 5K Open

So I guess there is no way to over ride this manually. Dang, what happens if your in a bowl at Glamis and the tang thing decided to go to neutral? Then your in a world of hurt. "? Should have left it with a big stick on the floor. LOL

lol love my lever

Electronics are great when they work. Too bad they don't allow opting for a manual case on up-graded trucks. That's one of the reasons I'm not in the market for a new truck.

Thanks for the info Bob. I Like my manual 4x4 shift, so if I ever get a new Ram/CTD I'll have to get a ST again unless they do away with the manual shift.

Hi
To switch from low to high and the truck is not rolling you must place the trans in park - not in neutral, there is a switch logic in the computer that don't let you do that, the transfer case will stuck that way.
