I'm concerned.

At 4000 miles my seal began to leak. Brought it to the dealer and he replaced it.

At 5500 miles It began to leak again. I brought it to the dealer again and mentioned that maybe the transfer case vent was blocked or something. I mean why would it leak twice in 5500 mile? They replaced and said it was put in crooked.

Now we are at 6900 miles. AAAUUURRRGGGHHH!!!!

*%#$&^^* is leaking again. made an appointment for Tuesday June 19th.

Any Ideas

I love my truck and this is the only problem I have ever had with it. but im losing my patients.

Join the club

I just had my 3rd one (1st one being orginal) put in on Wed of this week. 18,900 miles on truck I let it leak for a while to avoid the dealer, but finalyl got tired of it. So first trip was in May, 2nd trip was this past week. Just looked under the truck today and notice some nice fresh red oil. So I'll give it a week and then prolly try again.

Your talking bout the outputshaft seal right?

Again, join the club. It took them 9 (nine!) tries to fix mine and they never did actually fix it. It ended up going to arbitration and I got a whole new transfer case.

Vamam Did you have this fixed under factory warranty. Or the mopar 1 Year thing for parts.

Any help would be great . I am on the second. Now the dealership tells me the transfercase will have to come out to fix the leak and cost another $600. 00.

Ican get a new one of $1500. 00

How did you get them to replace it.

I have had this problem many times before with either my NV241HD or my NP208 (same manufacturer). In fact, I still have a slight leak. Next time I will remove the tailshaft housing and replace the bushing the driveshaft slip yoke runs in along with the seal. As I didn't want DC touching my Ram (and they wouldn't give me the seal under warranty to install myself), I had to purchase it from Dodge... that darned thing lists for $28. (for the NV241HD seal).   He!!, I'll bet if you added up the price of all the parts required to build a complete Ram through Dodge/Mopar parts it would exceed the price of a B2!

Hey All,

I just had this happen to mine at 56,000 miles and I wheel mine pretty hard. Had Jeff at MIT (known for building offroad vehicles and axles and stuff) replace the seal twice with it leaking the next day both times. Never had a problem before. We are thinking that either the bushing is bad (Info from Joe Donnely thanks) or the output shaft isn't straight. Don't have time to check for now because I'm heading for Colorado for fun (whitewater rafting, Hiking, and Horseback riding) and getting one of Joe's clutches on the way home. Jeff and I are thinking about doing a fixed yoke conversion because I don't like the idea of losing a rear driveshaft and finding a way to plug the output to keep the oil in for the trip home (from the trail). I'll post what I find out.

Have a good one.

Just want to pass along some info I heard. The mechanic at the dealership (he is a TDR member) told me that there is a rubber plug on the tailshaft housing or top rear of the transfer case that tends to collapse. There is a revised plug that is working fine, he showed me the new one but I didnt see exactly where it was on the xfer case. He said this was the cause of leaks assumed to be the slip yoke seal but it would leak and airflow would carry the lube back to the seal area. Again, I did not see exactly where this rubber plug was located but he said it covered an opening to access a snapring.

Hi.

Thank you I will have a look and see if it is leaking for there. because I have oil all over the tailshaft and the mopar technician as they do not have mechanics at dodge dealer ship where I live. They want to take the transfer case out so they can work on it at a table ( So they can make more work for them . ) Thank you all for the help.

Check the vent... a plugged vent will cause pressure to buildup as it heats resulting in fluid being pushed out the seals.

Tail Shaft Seal Leak

Here is a summary of the transfer case rear output shaft seal leaks on my '98. 5.

27,300 -Replace X-fer Case Rear Output Seal

31,734 -Replace X-fer Case Rear Output Seal

32,847 -Replace X-fer Case Rear Output Seal, Extension, Bushing, & Driveshaft Yoke

The new yoke replacement basically solved the problem. The old one had too much radial run-out, so it caused too much wear/play in the rear extension bushing. This resulted in the seals' failures.

There are about 59k miles on the truck now, without any further leaks from this area. It was about $650 for the fix, under the 3/36 warranty.

Mactruck -

Well figured ya might want your fireman to be animated? Did a lil work to it and it will look like this :

Whatcha think of it?

I had 10 seals put in over a one year period plus one tail shaft housing still leaked ,they finally put a vent harness with new check valve so far it seems to be ok.

awesome :D

Nothing like TDR members helping TDR members.

Thanx Kat, Looks great!

Had my seal replaced and thay said it should be the last time  We'll see.

My seal on the xfer case was leaking at 1600 miles. When I took it in the dealer replaced the seal and yoke. Going on 12000 miles and all is well.
