Well, I have what appears to be my 2nd transfer case tail shaft leak. Looking through the threads, someone mentioned checking the vent - it's also mentioned in the service manual. Problem is, I can't find it - maybe I'm just overlooking it. Can anyone help me out here?

Thanks!

Do you have a 241HD? The HD versions have a plug in the top of the tailshaft housing that tends to collapse and the fluid runs down and onto the tailshaft. Check it first then if it is OK, join the "I have a new tailshaft seal" club. I've already had it replaced ( 23,000 ).

Saw your previous post ...

and I already checked that - thanks for the heads up! It may be leaking some there, but I don't think that's all of it.

Is there a vent on this thing???

Sorry,I can't help you out. But I also have a leak from my transfer case (NV241LD) and have some questions.

Where is the best place to get the seal?

Do you use the Mopar Dexron II as recommended or something else?

I could get it fixed under warranty but I figure it will not cost much and I could be sure it is done right if I do it myself.

There is a shaft collar that the seal rides on, best to replace it also or you might be replacing the seal again shortly. If the seal has been leaking for a while the collar may have a groove worn in it where the seal rides from dust sticking on the leak. Most dealers replace the seal 5+ times before figureing this out if ever.

Yep, I have the same problem except it leaks from the rear seal (no doubt:( ). I've had the seal replaced twice with no luck :( I'm looking at a Tail shaft eliminator kit from JE (anybody tried one?). I would like the ability to be able to remove the rear driveshaft if it broke and use the front axle to get me home.

Thanks.

Tom
