i read that leaving the hubs in the "free" position and putting the transfer case in 2HI will increase mileage. I've been leaving it in neutral. I was trying to put it in 2hi today while the transmission was in neutral. I was wondering if the 4X4 Engaged light comes on (the one by the map light) when you put it in 2hi. i didn't know, so if anyone could help me, it'd be extremely appreciated.

ps, what does everyone else do with their transfer case/hubs?

thank you

I have taken the following from my 92 Owner's Manual. I hope it answers your questions?

"The transfer case reminder light will only come on if you shift the transfer case to the 4H or the 4L position. "

"Use 4H and 4L driving positions for low traction conditions only (mud, sand, or snow). Do not use four wheel drive on dry, hard surfaced roads. Increased tire wear and damage to driveline components may occur. "

"When operating in two-wheel drive (2H) under normal driving conditions the lock-out hubs should be manually disengaged. This will prevent unnecessary wear to the front drive components and provide the best fuel economy. "

ps. If your transfer case is in the neutral position your vehicle would not move regardless of the gear that you are in.

I usually run with my hubs unlocked and in 2H. If I might need 4wd then I will lock the hubs in. For some reason my 4wd indicator light doesn't work. I do know that my wife's truck gets 2 mpg less than mine because of the difference in four wheel drive setups on the front axle. Hope that helps you a bit.

so if i understand this, i have to have it in 2hi right now, or else i wouldn't be moving. so, when i said i was in neutral, i was making a fool of myself, because to move i would have to have it in 2hi right?

this is my first 4x4, and i don't have the transfer case handle cap, so i'm going by what's on the back of the sun visor.

BTW, what is that little black thing next to the t-case lever, it looks like a little hitch?
