My old pump had a broken check valve. Got a new pump from O'reilly. New pump is a carter. Original was an AC. Mounting holes

in the right place but the pump body was bigger. Looked like it would work fine. Had to cut out a section of line between lift pump and filter and use fuel hose. Truck would not start. Lift pump not pumping, but no idea why. Perhaps the bigger body has plunger location off? To keep from tearing back down. , I put an inline electric pump on. Running fine now. Some day I am going to remove the lift pump and see why it is not working. Think I will rig up a bypass and keep the electric on there too. Sure was easy to bleed the system. I really enjoy tdr and the message boards.

Hope this information will save someone some trouble later on.

You may want to remove the pump and put a plate over the hole. It is my understanding that when a fuel pump runs dry for long periods it is prone to failure that results in an oil leak.

Not sure where your electric pump is in the system, hope it just takes the place of the mechanical pump. Folks who have installed electric pumps upstream of the fuel heater have experienced leaks. The fuel heater is designed to have suction on it, not pressure.

Now lets see if you can get your electric to last longer than the ones the 24 valve guys are constantly battling.

Had to replace my lift pump this past fall. I also noticed the beefier pump and the Carter name (the original pump was made in England, I believe). Using new fuel line is probably a smart thing to do while everything is apart, too. After all, it's been in there for about 7 years. The new pump fit well and bolted up great; the plunger seems to be more substantial than the original one too.

Lift Pump Plunger

I thought I read a post (by Joe Donnelly, I think) that said to use the old plunger since the cam end of the plunger has already been "boken in" and a new plunger might cause excessive wear on the cam lobe. Also, he recommended some cam lube on the end of the plunger when reassembling. Anybody confirm this?

My new Carter lift pump is going on next week.
