I need to get a transfer tank, nothing fancy, just to tranfer diesel to equipment. I am looking at Northern Tool and Tractor Supply Company. There is bit of price difference in the Aluminum and steel. I want to spend a little money as possible, but I don't want to buy worthless junk. thanks for any comments

The aluminum tanks sold by Northern Tool come from RDS Aluminum. I have bought 2 from Northern... one for my '97 and one for my '04. 5. I have been pleased with both. I used them as an aux. fuel tank in the bed of my truck. The obvious is the aluminum would be lighter and less prone to rust.

We have some steel 50 gal for work that I got from TSC. They work ok. Paint doesn't last and they tend to get some rust in the fuel. We've had them for a few years. If you're looking for cheap but functional the steel will work. One cracked along the mounting bracket so I had to weld it. I don't know if that's good or bad. I guess it's good because I can't weld aluminum. Whatever you get definitely get a filter set up and if the funds are available get an electric pump. If you have to get a hand pump don't get the rotation pump, get the back and forth "stroker"... . :D

i would get the almuminum one since it won't rust out on you and the slickest pump ive ever heard about was to pump air in the tank just about 10 psi or so and the fuel will just flow out of the tank our old timer mechanic had one set up like that sweetest thing there ever was if you want i can get the details for you its real cheap and you never have to hand pump it

nothing fancy you say?

I have a simple 100 gallon steel transfer tank I use on a regular basis (10+yrs old). It was factory powder coated. I have no rust interior or exterior. I love it. Nothing against aluminum.

I had a weather guard steel and it rusted unmercifully inside, and cracked at welds. I went through lots of fuel filters (bulk filter at the tank as well as the stock filter) until I got too disgusted to continue using it. That was on a P pump truck. I'd never risk all that rust with the newer pumps. Transfer Flow uses aluminized steel and their steel tanks give zero problems ever. I have one steel (56 gal replacement) from them, and a 74 gal aluminum in bed tank from them, both are great.
