My son can home and wanted me to drive his truck (late 91 CTD,auto, 4x4). He said the transfercase shifter was rattling bad. It had been rattling for a while, and now it is getting louder. So I took it for a drive, yes, it was rattling.

We suspected the transfercase. So it got fresh fluid. No change.

OK, now for some in depth diagnostics. The rear axel goes up onto the jack stands.

Start truck, drop into gear. Ah ha, noise. Take it out of O/D and the noise is reduced. Crawl under with stethoscope and check T'case, very little noise,, check O/D unit,, OH MY GOSH!! it hurt my ears. OK, now we know.

Pulled the O/D unit and ran it into Jamies transmission in Snohomish. Jamie calls and says it's not as bad as it could have been. It was the large bearing inside that was eating itself. Easy fix since we pulled it before it could do any damage.

Since this O/D already has the upgraded parts, we decided to upgrade the trannys shifting abilities.

All fixed, very little cost, and shifting better

My point here is, if your transfercase lever is rattling, do like we did and check the O/D for problems before putting a bungee on the lever.

Hadnt considered that before; thanks for passing on a good idea, even though currently (subject to change at any time) I dont have an auto OR 4x4. I am actually surprised you could spot it without putting a load on it. Glad you got it figured out, though. A stitch in time... ... ... Wish the farmer I work for occasionally lived by the same theory.....

Sheesh... Daniel, you gotta remember, Dave is magic! He can spot a bad bearing from ten miles on a truck that isn't even running...

PS: that's also why I don't do slushboxes. :-laf

Don't use a bungy cord...

Just get the nylon horseshoe washer that is on the the shifter gate. This provides a surface for the shift lever to rub/run on and keeps the rattling away... .

My brother did this and it work slick as a whistle... . I think I've even posted the part number in here somewhere... .
