Howdy all,

I tried to post this awhile back, and somehow the system "timed

out" on me and my post was lost. Since I had such an extremely

positive experience, I wanted to make sure to post about both

the company and their fine product.

-----

It all started when I called TransferFlow back in October I think,

to schedule my installation. I live about 120 miles from their shop

in Chico, and as I went to college at Cal State U. Chico, any

excuse to go back to Chico is always welcome :D So, I called and

talked with a sales rep. He asked how I heard of their company, I

said the TDR. He then asked me if I had any fuel system

modifications. I explained about the pusher pump I had installed

back by the tank. The sales guy said the TF tank goes right along

the frame all the way to the transfer case, and so my extra fuel

pump would be in the way and I should remove it before the

install appointment. Now how is that for pro-active

notification?? :D

They have two installation times - 7 & 11 AM. Since I wanted to

get back to work in Sacramento for some of the day, I opted for

the 7AM time. Ok, so I arrive at 6:45, and a guy in a beautiful

white Cummins pulls in next to me. We go into the office, and

what do we see, but a big sign on the receptionists desk

welcoming all the install appointments for the day. Our names,

what city/town we're each from, etc. . Now how is that for making

you feel welcomed and a valued customer?? :D

Now before the actual install ever starts, they do a full vehicle

walk around damage inspection with you, so that everyone

knows exactly what damage you came in with, and what, if any,

was caused by TF during the install. That was totally unexpected,

and very professional in my opinion!

So, Gary, the other 7AM install appointment, the guy with the

other Cummins, and I get to talking, and we find we are each

a TDR member. So we spend most of the morning swapping

BOMB stories, etc... .

A while in to the install, I get called out to the shop for a question

about something. I found the technician doing my install was

concerned about the type of hose clamps I had used on my fuel

line when I removed my helper pump and ran a NAPA all fuel

rated line from the hard line up to the braided lines I have close

to the fuel filter. I had used garden variety hose clamps (2 of

them) and his concern was that I would have to drop the TF tank

to ever get to them if they were to leak. He suggested they be

replaced with permanent compression OBD II type clamps. Again,

how's that for great customer care?? :D

Ok, so I spent the rest of the time talking and BSing with the tech

while he finished up the install. After the tank was in, they

transfer all your old fuel into the new tank after filtering it. Then,

they fill your tank up completely before you ever get the truck

back, to make sure there are absolutely no leaks. Wow!!

Now, another full walk around damage inspection just to make

sure no damage occurred during the install. None. Not even a

scratch :D Now back inside for the final paperwork. This is where

the folks at TFI really shine... ... They give you information about

exactly how much the tank holds at each point on the factory fuel

gauge. When they are filling the tank, they write down exactly

how many gallons at E, 1/8, 1/4, 3/8... . all the way to F on the

gauge. SO now I know *exactly* how much fuel I have at any

given point, no more guessing. They also show you what the

average diesel or gas price in Chico is at that date, so you know

they aren't ripping you off for the cost of filling the tank for you.

Now for a nice little surprise. The tank is marketed as a 54 gallon

tank. It actually holds a shade over 60 gallons. I was told that by

law, there must be ~10% room for fuel expansion, and so if the

tank holds 60 gallons, they have to market it as a 54 gallon tank.

So, if you wanted to, you could fill it to the last drop and get a

few more gallons that you thought you could.

Oh, I also asked to keep my OEM tank, which they were happy to

let me have back. So, if anyone out there is interested, I have my

OEM tank and hanger brackets in my garage.

So, do you get the feeling that I am completely thrilled with the

service, service, service and service I received from TransferFlow

Inc. ?? Well, I am! Not to mention their tanks are simply

unbelievable! This thing is massive, and built like a bank vault. It

dwarfs the OEM tank, which is pretty darn huge itself. The TFI

tank goes from the rear axle right up to the back end of the 4x4

transfer case, so if I ever need any transmission/clutch/transfer

case work done, I will likely have to drop the tank.

Oh, forgot to mention I took advantage of their current special on

in-shop installs. $125 instead of the normal $160 (I think) for this

tank. So, the $35 savings there more than paid for my fuel,

breakfast and lunch to drive up there :D

Oh, in case you were wondering, the final bill for tank, installation

and fuel came to $902 and change.

Great company, great product. I can't over-recommend them if

you are considering a fuel tank BOMB.

Almost forgot to mention this. I know the folks at TransferFlow

Inc. are TDR members. I saw a couple of offices that had framed

articles from the TDR, as well as other trade magazines, hung

with pride on their walls. Now how  is that!

disclaimer: no vendor affiliations at all - just a happy customer!

Happy Holidays all

'BOUT DAMNN time Tom. . you have been lusting about these for a long time now. .

My 54 Gal fuel/tool + my factory get me about 1400 miles +/- foot control

Tom, about that statement about dropping the tank to get at the clutch how tight is it? I have a 97 with the 60 gallon Aero Tank and didnt have any problem pulling the transmission and transfer case, is the 5spd longer, or maybe variance in the two tanks design? I now have a 98 5spd and might run into the problem you stated.

Kidfan - well, the forward edge of the TF tank is about 3" - 4"

from the end of the transfer case. I honestly have no idea if that

is enough clearance to drop the transfer case/transmission without

dropping the fuel tank or not. It just looks awfully close..... Oh, I

have the 6 speed NV5600, which is considerably longer than your

5 speed transmission, so likely you would have considerably more

clearance. Since Blair is about to install his, and he has a 5

speed, maybe if you keep tabs on him, he'll be kind enough to let

us all know how much clearance the 5 speeds have.

I didn't ask anyone while I was at TFI either... . Hopefully I'll never

need to find out:rolleyes:

Blair, you made a great choice. That is one very sweet tank :)

Excellent write-up Tom. Maybe you should be writing for the TDR on hardcopy. :D Good job. I have the Aft TransferFlow and love it. Yes, their support for the DIY crowd is great too.

thanks tom

Thank you for the reply I think I heard on here that the 5600 was 6" longer than the 4500 so I'm sure it would make it, probably just a little harder than it already is (something to look forward to). Jeff

Nice write-up Tom!

I too am happy with my Transfer Flow 54 gallon replacement fuel tank! :D I purchased mine not long after they released them for sale.

POINT OF CLARIFICATION: the 54 gallon Transfer Flow fuel tank DOES NOT have to be dropped to remove the transfer case/transmission as a unit (AUTOMATIC transmission). That's one of the beauties of the 54 gallon Transfer Flow tank as opposed to the 60 gallon Aero Tank counterpart. In addition to having a bunch of holes drilled in your frame (for mounting the Aero fuel tank), you get to drop the tank to R&R the transmission/transfer case ( ).

Make mine Transfer Flow!

Tank weight

Good news about the quality. I want to get one of these badly but am having a weight problem. My truck with a pop up slide in camper loaded weighs 9200 lbs with the wife and I in it. I'm 400 pounds over weight as it is.

Could someone tell me what is the difference in weight between the stock tank and the 54 gal replacement one? I know it's got to be plenty as stock is plastic. I'm looking for weight of the empty tanks only. I know what diesel weighs so don't factor that in for me.

Dennis

Dennis,

I have my OEM tank in the garage, so I can guesstimate it's weight, I don't know the weight of the TF tank, but I can't imagine the difference would be more than 50 pounds... ... .

Purely speculation on my part.

John, thanks for the info with the auto transmission. Since I have the NV5600 6 speed, I don't know if I have enough clearance, but as I said, hopefully I'll never have to find out. But, since the TF tank uses only two OEM style hangers, it wouldn't really be that much of a pain to drop it if need be. Also interesting info to know the Aero Tank needs additional holes drilled into the frame.....

Tom

NOT SO JOHN

John as I said in a earlier post the Aero Tank DOES NOT need to be dropped to pull a automatic with transfer case attached I've done it twice to R&R torqe convertors (don't ask who's I won't tell) with no problems (well not with the tank) whatsoever. Also as far as drilling I don't like the idea either but only one hole is drilled in the crossmenber the holes in the frame are all existing, that one hole holds a additional bracket in the middle of the bed like I said I dont like drilling either but the mounts are very strong and I was/am very happy with it. As a note this was on a 97 ex-cab 4x4 with a auto transmission. Jeff
