The 60,000-mile service on my 2001 dually recommends a band adjustment. My normal habit is to not argue with the folks that built the truck but this is different. I almost feel like leaving well enough alone is better in this case. I wonder if those of you that had the adjustment done are glad you did it.

With previous vehicles I've had a terrible history with the "good" transmission shops ranging from work I am sure didn't need done to two failed attempts at a rebuild on my GMC dually. It failed when I was over three hours from home, both times. My local dealerships charges more but that doesn't seem to reflect in the service, unfortunately. Numerous nationwide studies confirm my fears as almost 50% of transmission rebuilds fail the first time. I know a band adjustment isn't a rebuild, but I am still wary and would like the input of those of you who have done it.

On another but related note, I have never used full synthetics in the transmission or rear-end. I realize there are disciples of the "nothing is better" or nothing is more a waste of money" than synthetic fluids, but I would like to supplement what I have already read with your input.

Thanks and Merry Christmas.

For long transmission life, definitely follow the factory recommended service intervals and procedures... adjust those bands! Make sure it's done exactly by-the-book. If you're mechanically inclined and have the tools, it's something you can do yourself.

Failing to adjust the bands usually results in delayed or difficult 1st to 2nd gear shifts... or worse... when wear on the front band becomes great enough.

Regarding synthetic transmission fluid:

Any licensed ATF+4 transmission fluid is already synthetic, even the "lower cost house" brands found at some chain auto parts retailers. Chrysler's ATF+4 Information Center web site has more information and lists all licensed brands.

Happy holidays!
