Hey guys, well i just dropped the valvebody to replace it, look what i found! :--) it looks like i somehow broke the strap holder-onner thing. sorry for my lack of nomenclature knowledge, any ideas what i broke and how to fix it??

alright just found the other side of the piece on the left, so can i just replace this assembly that holds that strap around the drum???

That appears to be the remains of the stock front band strut. If you have increased the pressures in your trans it will likely fail. Get a stronger from one of our transmission vendors. The front band anchor may have fallen out too. When you get all the parts just put it back together. It should be ok if that is all the trash you could find in the pan.

Thanks A Lot Man I Got The Parts And I Installed Them Hopefully Its Right If You See Something Wrong Please Let Me Know.

You broke the original band strut, you need to upgrade it. The other piece is the band anchor. Seriously, this is an inexpensive part, I'd upgrade it.

The apply lever is not in the correct position. it rests against the front servo apply rod, swing it over and the strut fits into a groove in it. The replacement strut looks like a stock one. Did you reinforce it?

huh... i didn't know you could replace a band without taking the trans apart. Just worked over and around the drum? Can this be done on the rear as well? Might be harder on rear as it seems to be one of the one piece double wrap types on mine.

live and learn...

I haven't gotten into the CTD A. T. yet I am just learning about there weak points but I would adjust all the bands ,you are using up a lot of clutch matieral and then get too lose to stay together.

Bill asked me to type this to you, as Fred pointed out your band lever is in the wrong position. There is no sense in replacing an oem part with another if you do not know what caused it to break in the first place. Do not put that valve body on the way you have it, the shifter arm belongs on the VB not in the transmission case as you have it. Call you vendor and get them to help you do it properly.

WOW! I didn't notice that you had taken the shifter arm off the VB!! Is that the parking rod E-clip? The shifter arm has to be on the VB before you put it back. The park rod stays in the trans and you put it in the end of the shifter arm and put the e-clip back in after you put the VB back in the trans. There is a ball bearing and a spring around there somewhere that goes in it.

Robert, the band was never out of the trans. The band struct was broken.

John, the band lining is only about 1/32" thick. Not much to wear there.

"The park rod stays in the trans and you put it in the end of the shifter arm and put the e-clip back in after you put the VB back in the trans. "

This is the hard way. takes a third hand from a very skinny arm.

The park rod pulls out of the rear "socket" in the trans, you can leave the park rod on the valve body. makes it a lot easier. getting that eclip on between the valve body and the trans while holding it and aligning it is misery.

I spent a whole day trying to put the rod back in with it on the VB. It worked on older torqueflite transmissions but not on these. I put it in my '81 Imperial just like that. When I bought my DTT VB it came with a tool to put the E-clip back in. I put the VB on and pulled the park rod down into the hole in the shifter arm. It has to be in 1st gear. I held it down with some wire while I slipped the e-clip into place with the DTT tool. Just a very few minutes to do that. Pretty easy. Even easier with the trans out of the truck.

yea, bad photo skills, we had the shifter arm in there because that is the way it came out, it wasnt pretty but for re-install i put it all back together. as for the detent ball??? i found the spring but no ball, the way it came out was a mess and pieces were-a-flyin so i got the new valve body all re-assembled and installed with minimal issues. just more parts for the wall of shame!! :D thanks for all your help guys

There should be a ball that the spring pushes into the rooster comb notches in the shifter arm. If it's not there you will have problems.
