I have a 1998 2500 Ram with a 24 valve Cummings with the heavy duty towing package. I also, had the injectors changed to boost the HP and torque. I tow a 10,800 # fifth-wheel trailor. Recently while going up a hill in overdrive, the trnsmission started to chatter. It was like driving on a wash board road. As I turned off the overdrive, it seemed OK. I had the truck put in the dealer garage and they could find nothing wrong, no codes showed up. They said the fluid was somewhat discolored, so I had them change it and the filter. I have been pulling the fifth wheel since the trukck was new. It now has 64,547 miles on it.

Can anybody give me some advice on the cause and solution?

I think your overdrive clutches were starting to go out, heating up and slipping.

If your transmission is stock and you have added power along with 10,000+ pounds of trailer you are compounding the issue of the stock trannies weakness.

You should consider an aftermarket Transmission set up to hold your extra power, and to assist with your trailer pulling.

I use the ATS Triplelok system, and it takes anything I can throw at it, and you can also Safely use an Exhaust brake with the Triplelok torque converter.

Give Clint or Don a call at ATS, they'll set you up!
