Our local transmission guru sees a lot of Dodge transmissions from Cummins powered Dodges that have been pulling large fifth wheels. Most all the trucks were stock, so he hasn't seen the devastation that bombing can do. His opinion of the Dodge transmission is that it is a very sound unit. He's seen some go 200,000 miles pulling medium sized fifth wheels and serviced regularly.

He just installed a Transgo Transmission kit to beef up the stock unit. It increases line pressure to help the torque converter clutch hold. It actually can cause line pressure to exceed the 96 PSI limit that the computer recognizes as the limit. To get around that a resister is installed to fool the computer into thinking the line pressure is not exceeding the 96 PSI value. It also has a number of componets which allow the transmission shop to adjust shift points to the desired RPM dependent upon the engine (12 vs 24 valve) so shifting is happening within the peak torque range. It also firms and shortens up the shifting pattern in many cases. Another nice feature (if you don't abuse it) is to command the transmission to hold or downshift to any gear including first regardless of RPM. If you aren't carefull you could overspeed the engine, but in some cases it would be nice to drop into first on a downgrade while doing 30 MPH. The stock unit will not allow that. It also allows cooling of transmission oil while in park, something that the stock unit may not do.

I haven't heard any advise on this unit, so maybe I'm the Guinea Pig, or maybe it's so bad nobody uses it. So far, everything is working well, so we'll see.

Trango kits aren't new, I know of a couple of members that have used them or still are. Most put them in as insurance until they get the full upgrade(DTT, BD, ATS, Dunrite, Suncoast etc WHATEVER YOU LIKE, don't want to start another transmission debate!;) :D )

Just curious, how much for the install(If you don't mind saying)? The kits go for about 75$ online.

Trango Unit

Bought it from the transmission guy. It was about $100. 00 for the kit and $100. 00 for the labor.

After looking at the instructions I'm glad I didn't try it. Notches and holes in the valve body, lots of adjustments and springs to put in, etc.

Any idea if the kit helped the other members get a few more miles out of the transmission?

Jim, I share your transmission guys opinion that the transmissions as we get them are good, solid and tough. They will take an incredible amount of abuse and still get us from A to B. The stock torque convertor leaves a lot to be desired IMO though.

I think that if you increase the line pressures a reasonable amount, quicken the shift application, quicken the TCC lock application and do not beat the transmission too bad that it will increase the life of the unit. Quickening the shifts and lock will eliminate a lot of slippage which equates to heat and wear in the transmission. Also get out of the power some when it shifts or locks up, that should help eliminate some unnecessary heat and slippage. Firm shifts and resonable operation should do wonders for transmission life. These are just my opinions, I do not claim to be an expert.

jim, this isn't new, as said. ted janetty and i have been e-mailing back and forth discussing this for my truck. he recommends it highly. i'm planning on that as my January mod, most likely. keep us "posted" as you run it.

btw, i guess i'm a glutton for punishment, i'm figuring on doing it myself... ... ... ... ;)
