Group Purchase for transmission stuff?

I just bought one of those manual transmission filters made by Fuller/ Eaton for my 6 spd. (I've got about 24,000 miles on the truck and tow a 9500lb travel trailer. ) I haven't put it on yet, but was just wondering if many of you have used it and what your opinions are. Does the filter itself really help or is it just worth having for the extra 8 oz. of fluid capacity? How often have you changed the filter and how dirty has it been? Would it make sense to just leave out the filter and put a strong magnet in the case to attract metal flakes? Also, should I use the paper and cork gaskets provided or just use Ultra Black RTV compound or should I use both? Thanks for your opinions.

Bill,

I installed one of these filters when I put a new NV5600 in my truck (I swapped out an out for the 6spd).

I have read many suggest to change @ 15k miles.

Also, I believe there is a magnet on the bottom of the trans case itself (I have't looked).

I used black rtv instead of the gaskets with no leaks.

From what I have read, this was a worth while expense.

I've had one since I had 25k on my truck. I change the lube & filter every 25k & the filter's pretty black when I pull it. I've put the filter kits on the trans & transfer case on my old 4WD Chevy, also. I use the gaskets and Permatex non-hardening sealant when installing & changing the filter.

I installed one about 15000 miles ago when I changed to Amsoil. I haven't seen the filter (will probably change in 5000 miles), but seems like a good idea. I sealed the cover with RTV with no leaks.

Interestingly enough, I was told by a Geno's employee that a magnet will do the same thing as their filter kit would.

He also stated that you can never have enough fluid, but the extra capacity really isn't needed! :-laf

I almost bought the kit just for his honesty!

Albeit, I stuck a magnet down in the bottom of the pan and filled the thing up. I didn't notice a magnet from the factory in there.

Filter

Have had one of these filters on my 6-Speed for quite awhile. Probably needs changing, but haven't checked it. The additional oil capacity and filtering certainly couldn't hurt. My 6-speed does have a magnet in the bottom of the tanny. Checked it for metal residue, when I installed the filter, and it was clean.
