hi guys, need to change trans fluid and i wanted a little more info on draining and filling thru cooler lines. read a little on here about that but still not too clear na the proceedure. Can anyone help please????? thank you

before you change your transmission fluid buy a pan that has a drain plug on it. It helps immensly being able to drain ALL the fluid before trying to change the filter or adjust the bands.

thanks for the replys, but i was wanting a litle more on what i seem to recall reading where you put one cooler line in bucket full for fluid and the other in empty bucket till fluid comes out clean. Only negitive ive heard is line pressure might be too much and make a big mess??? any opinions on that ?? thanks again

Here is a very good procedure on ATF change procedure.

On both my '95 and '03 trucks, I was able to drain about 12 quarts from the

transmission by loosening the ten valve body mounting bolts several turns,

thus allowing more oil to drain. Re-torque to 100 inch-pounds- you might want to verify that spec for a newer vehicle.

There was another transmission fluid change article in issue 54 where they say to drain all the fluid (vs adding fresh fluid while old one flows out) and then drop the (dryish) pan and change the filter, button back up and refill.

That was written for the 2nd gen's. I'm guessing it would be the same for the 48RE ? I'm due for my first fluid change and would like to avoid the mess of dropping the pan first.

Also, in neither of these articles, do they mention if the hole where the line is disconnected from should be plug or not. Any inputs ?

Thx

do a pan drop, change filter, fill with 5 or so qts. trace cooler line that runs to the rear fitting on trans case (at front of o/d housing). disconnect the rubber hose that connects to the rear line of trans and drop it in a bucket. we usually gently put a heavy pair of vise grips on the steel quick disconnect fitting where it is crimped from the factory to weigh it down and keep the hose in the bucket. put lever in neutral, start engine. Immediately start filling with new fluid and continue until fluid that is coming out of the line is clean. stop engine, re-connect line. start engine in neutral, ck fluid and top off/drain as needed. test drive truck to get hot and re-check in neutral fill/drain as needed. **if at any point the fluid gets aireated or the hose is "spitting", shut off engine, fill with 3 or so qts and start the procedure again. **
