Are the "power flushes" that some service centers offer really that much better than just dropping the pan? I have actually never done my own transmission fluid change because I'm avoiding the mess; however I may do it this time just to avoid the extra expense.

Steve, sometimes the power flushing can dislodge crud and actually plug up the valve body.

This is where a mag hytec transmission pan comes in real handy.

There is a large magnet in the factory pan as well.

The first time I dropped my trans pan, I made a drain plug. I drilled a 1/2 inch hole in the driver side rear of the bottom of the pan. You have to grind off the plating on the pan to be able to weld on it. I'm not sure what it is, but weld WILL NOT stick to it!!! I brazed a 3/8 nut on the outside of the pan. I cut down a bolt to make a drain plug. I put on a dab of silicone as a gasket.

I drain the pan and change the fluid about every 15-20k. I drop the pan and change the filter every 3-4 times. Makes fluid changes fast and easy!

Steve, I just had mine power flushed a couple weeks ago. The mechanic told me that when you do this most shops will only flush 13 quarts thru the system. If you want more you have to tell them. He flushed 30 quarts thru mine. The fluid cleared up around 25 quarts but we ran 5 more thru for good measure. It ran me $180 for the flush and filter.

Whoa! $180 to flush the trans! Well, if the fluid was that bad, it would be worth it. But, my fluid comes out looking like new! Even changing it every 15k, I don't spend anywhere near that kind of money and I know I am running clean fluid!
