I am planning on doing the transmission filter and fluid service on my truck. Given that you do not get at all the existing fluid in the transmission when you do one of these changes, is it practical or even safe to go with a synthetic fluid ?

Also, what synthetic would you recommend.

Thanks

Practical and safe? Sure it is...

I recently replaced my torque converter and did a trans fluid change. It took 15 quarts to refill. A normal fluid change takes 10 (late model pan).

Let the fluid drain with the pan off and the filter off. I usually let mine go overnight. You can do it quicker by loosening the valve body bolts.

Rest easy if you plan to use Amsoil synthetic.

I have been using it for almost 45,000 miles. No troubles or problems with the oil. I have heard from others on this web site that it extended the life of heavy service duty fleet truck transmissions. I also use the 85-90 synthetic in the front and rear axles. I use the Amsoil products in my wifes KIA and improved performace in fuel milege and smoother operation has been noted. Sounds like a sales pitch but I don't sell the stuff.
