Has anybody heard this or is the mechanic crazy. A diesel mechanic told me to run a quart of ATF in every tank of fuel. He says it is good for the engine.

That is the old school way of thinking. I would say never do this with the newer trucks. VP44 or the Cp3 injection pumps will not tolerate this for long.

There is no reason to combine ATF with diesel you buy at any service station across America. Diesel #2 on or off road blends have all the lubricant additives needed for todays diesel truck engines. There are times when it is necessary to add lubricants to the fuel, but these are very rare and only happen in extreme conditions under extreme circumstances. Fore instance, if you were to burn jet fuel in your truck you would have to add some source of lubrication to the fuel, Jet engines are very different from a diesel engines and do not require the lubricating additives your diesel engines needs to keep it's pump, injectors, cylinders, etc from failing.

This will clog your catalytic converter. With that much going through you would have other problems as well.

As has been said, your truck is designed to run on #2 fuel period.

I had over 300,000 miles on my 97 when I sold it and it had 100 percent towing miles on it all gross 26,000 lbs or more. It always got about 8-9 miles mpg. This caculates out to about 46,000 gallons of fuel. I went through one set of injectors but never touched any fuel pumps. I used 1/2 a quart of ATF once every 3 months or so. It never hurt my 97, it ran, pulled great. I don't make this a practice any more but I would do it again with my 97, but I would never add a whole quart to every tank,

Using ATF, I don't think I would

From what I've read an hear on the TDR that adding ATF to the fuel tank is a no-no for sure. Maybe this is old school stuff, but there are still mechanics and some truckers still using the stuff with no problems. I don't believe I myself would use it. Had a shop Foreman at work any time our equipment came in for a PM the mechanics where instructed to add 1 quart ATF to fuel filter. My Grader has 12,664 hrs to date an it has not hurt it. Like I said I would'nt put it in my truck.
