Got an 05 auto. I added the deep dish pan and changed to amsoil transmission fluid 31,ooo miles ago . half of the miles is towing a 13,000 lb fiver. We are planning to towe to Calf. this Dec. Is it time to change fluid? or is it too early? And if i do change is it ok to just drain the fluid from the pan and not drop the pan and change the filter. Thanks Ski.

The SM states to change the fluid/filter every 30k when towing.

However, I would definately do a drain and check how much clutch material you have on the magnet. If its completely covered in black residue, I would probably drop the pan and clean it out along with change the filter.

You should be OK. I've seen 50,000 miles on this type of fluid with an oil analysis, which was still OK to use after 50K. This was on my last 94' CTD.

30k change interval with a group three atf not a group four plus you have the benefit of cooler trans temps with the deep pan. I'd run it at least twice as long or if nervous about that just do a drain and refill with that deep pan with a filter maybe every other time.

If it was my transmisson, I would drain it, drop the pan and replace the filter.

More the likely the filter in that trans will not look much differant then the new one at the miles on it. With that deep pan it has a drain plug. Thats why I said drain, top off. Do the filter next go round. That Amsoil fliud is good for many miles. In non towing vehicles 100k on it is the norm.

Thanks for all the input I think I will drain and refresh with amsoil , that was one of the sales pitches when i bought the deep dish. Should use around 8 qts am i correct?/

I don't want to steer you wrong because amsoil atf is expensive but I was told I needed at least 10 qt (Mopar ATF+4) with the Mag Hy-tech DD pan by the transmission guy I went to. I ended up just buying three gal to be on the safe side.

I'm thinking that DTT, ATS, Suncoast, Goerend, etc. do not recommend 100K per transmisson fluid change.

No but the manufactures do and I have seen many a late model vechile go that distance with no issues. Some of these trucks I've know have towing moderate daily. Amsoil states their fliud in lite to moderate usuage that 100k is fine. I don't think I'd do such personally. I think these trans bulders such as you mentioned are good at what they do. But they are not engineers nor do they see the huge amounts of trucks or vehicles lots of service depts have. In good times at the Chrysler dealer I was with we had 100 plus vehicles a day coming through easily. I was with a Pontiac dealer that we had 3 full time engine techs and 4 full time trans techs. 40 or so general line techs. It was slow for us to go home with a 100plus waiting in the wings to be gotton to. On my 1998 1500 I have a trans aftermarket trans cooler and I installed Amsoil using a fliud exchange and a new filter(cork gasket was ozzing)at around 40k. I have 92k on it now. I'm not sure when I'll service it again but not anytime soon. I ran a 1985 Caprice to 252k with only TWO filters and two fliud exchanges using Amsoil atf. 700r4 trans. Thats kinda the point with a full group four synthetic oil.

With my PML "deep" pan, it takes 9. 5 qts if I don't change the filter and don't drop the pan... approx 10 qts with the filter change and dropping the pan.

The Mag-Hytec holds 2 more quarts than the PML, so 12 qts should be just about right. Remember, that it only takes approx 8 to 12oz to go from low to full on the dipstick.

At the trans shop I'm going to have rebuild my 48RE (after I save up for it... ), they recommend every 10k miles for a fluid change. Thats for an engine with typical power bombs (Smarty, injectors, dual turbos, etc).
