I have found that after regular service the trans. pan gasket (OEM gasket)A518 trans. seems to start weeping then leaking fluid after 4-5000 kms. Is there another brand that is more durable? Can I use a sealant on the gasket? Both sides, one side?? Any thoughts on this guys???

I have found that Permatex Ultra Blue RTV, holds up real well to ATF. The part number is 77B, you should be able to get it at any auto supply. I use this product on large gear boxes all the time with no leaks. Put it on both sides of the gasket. To get a good seal the gasket surfaces must be exta clean, if solvent is used follow up with methyl hydrate (alcohol) and a paper wiper, keep wiping until the towel stays clean. If the silicone bonds properly, its almost impossible to get the pan off.

Bushwakr,I know these gaskets don't last very long, but you should be doing better. How much torque are you putting on the bolts? the gasket is very prone to leak if overtightened. I use a 1/4" ratchet or 3/8 stubby to keep form overdoing it. I think the book says 100 in/lbs, which is about 8 ft/lbs, which is not much. The Mopar gasket installed dry with maybe a slight coat of white grease on the case side is about the best deal. Stay away from Neoprene. I don't like to use Silicone because the next removal will be a pain and I wouldn't chance using too much and having any vulcanized worms getting into the filter.

Does the auto trans use a cork gaskett on the pan? If it does, it usally doesn't take much to overtorque the pan bolts and cause the gasket to extrude out from the mounting surface. Then again, I don't own a slush box, I've got a GetRag which isn't much better.

The gasket is cork. I have used these types of gaskets in the past and am normally very careful when torquing. I watch to see just the slightest hint of bulge and thats about all. So far I have tried to stay away from silicon (like) sealers as they can be a real rotter to get off. Perhaps the power mods. have started the trans. case flexing??? Someone told me that could happen.
It looks like I may have to try a sealer after all. Or go with a new pan like the Mag Tech. which is stiffer. What do you guys think. ??

thanks in advance guys!

Maybe some mechanic named Max Torque installed it before you got it, and warped the pan.

Guys, the pan gaskets I use is made by a company called "FARPAK" its black in colour, it duraprene, and require no silicon or sealants, the part # is 3859, but different suppliers may use different numbers. But the gaskets is for a 727 transmission and will work on all the dodge rams. Make sure that you get the one that's black in colour not brown.

Those black colored gaskets are available here in the states through NAPA and are bundled with the filter for around 10$. I have to agree with the others here though for a possible solution. OEM pans are thin and warp easily and it doesn't take much overtorquing to do it especially with those lousy cork gaskets. When the pan is removed put the pan on a plate to see how flat it is, and if warped, use a ball peen hammer to straighten the flange or, if you like quality, replace it all togeather with a Mag-Hytec pan. Observe the torque specs and use the better quality gasket with NO other products, like RTV for example, and the leaks around the pan will vanish.
