Stronger, parts are readily available nationwide, and less repetitive repairs. The Getrag can't handle the torque hammer a bumped pump will put through it. I did mine with a Blumenthal's kit last year, and love it. I kept my shafts, just had to cut a hole in the floor, install the transmission and go. I did install a new clutch just cause I was there with the original in my hand.....

so is there any advantage to doing the NV4500 conversion?

I think it would depend on what you want/need. If yours is good, then run it. If it is bad, then maybe a conversion is in order. I like mine, 312,000 miles all original including the clutch. Keep it full and keep it clean.

Good advice, there. I didn't think that maybe you had a good transmission that was running fine. Mine started to disentegrate around 135k, despite good oil and maintanance... ... I do run off-road a lot, and with quite a bit of power mods, eventually, it'll start to give you some trouble, just like any of them will. Power shifting is really bad on it, too, as well as lugging in a high gear, which is a pain, as the old rotary pump really gives the torque on the bottom end..... I kept mine for spare parts for the '85, and I have several newer trucks, so the NV4500 parts are usually on the shelf. It works good for me, but if you already have it, it's running fine, and it'll last you another 50k, why spend the $3k? There are lots of parts for other things, there!!

I'm going to run it as long as i can but i have 217K, on it and 1st and 3rd gear are getting bad, i cant go down into 1st with out being at a total stop, and i have to double clutch on the up shift into 3rd and it wont down shift in to 3rd unless im going 20mph or less.

That's where mine went. It finally got to where it wouldn't stay in 5th if you let off the accelerator and then got back into it... . When it started doing it in 3rd, I decided it was time... ... .

Mine went at about 187K plus / minus but before then it was a sob to get into first then you had to double clutch the 2/3 shift then one day it just stuck in gear although i think what started it is when the rear end blew up though

Ok i'll keep that in mine, im sure it'll only be a matter of time till it goes since i haul heavy and do a lot of mountain running with it.

Ive heard that its best to over fill the gut boxes as well and im guessing some power punch oil additive would help in it

Once the damage is done, there are no miracle cures. It will only get worse. If it were mine I would rebuild it before total failure.
