this is going to take a minute so bear with me. I went to install a tc lockup switch on my truck today only to find that a conector was already on the wire and the center plug on the ecm had been tampered with( I bought this truck used 6 months ago) I pulled the plug on the ecm and all of the pins pulled out of it(they stayed conected to their wires just pulled out of the plastic plug housing. I did my best to put them all back in. When i went to test my new switch i discoved that I have to manually place the truck in the gear that i want. (for example put it in D and it starts out in 3rd gear. however if i try to downshift it into 1st after it has been in D the truck will not move and just loades up like its chained to a tree. oh by the way did i mention that i no longer have overdrive as well. It also feels like the transmission is sliping or not locking up. I completly disconected my new switch and it made no difference, leading me too belive that something is horably wrong with that center plug on the ecm. thanks in advance for any help. . jim

I'd find a wiring diagram at the library and start the tedious task of checking every wire and location.

I too have done this (while at work) and it definately does not make your day.

Good luck!

Wow. . I think I would definetly go over that PCM plug with a magnifying glass or something to be absolutely sure the pins are where they are supposed to be.

Remove the lockup switch until you get it working at least back to stock.

Also, disconnect your batteries when working on the PCM or ECM, you can fry em by unplugging and re-plugging like that. A good power reset never hurt the PCM.

good luck

ok i think i have reached a point where i either have to find a way to replace that plug or go to my dealer and buy the whole harness. can anyone give me line on finding that plug. and does anyone know what the engine wiring harness is going to run me.

The only problem with that is... your going to be in the same spot. You'll have to sweet talk your dealer into getting you a pin-out diagram of the Harness involved. You'll have to match each wire with each pin.

If your going to replace it... . they will give you the plug, and a fist full of ends.

If you buy the whole harness, your talking big money.

The other "problem" you may run into is, for example, 2 Orange with a white tracer wires. Regardless, I'd sit down and use a wiring diagram. It really shouldn't take to long. A couple of hours at most.

Jim, I'm not sure about a '99, but my '01 factory service manual has a complete ECM connector pinout on page 8W-80-40. It includes the wire colors and pin numbers. The pins may have little spring barbs that can be bent out slightly so that the pins stay in their holes. Good luck. Jeff

Sounds like the front clutch is not releasing. If you have been driving around in limp mode for sometime the front clutch could have been burnt up.

ok well i got a new plug for my ecm from dodge. intalled it and am still having the same problem intermitently. Nothing particular that sets it off but it seams that if the truck sits for a period of time it goes back to normal and then will screw up again. any other ideas im all ears.
