Were are the good transmission shops from Kansas City east to Nashvile and on north from there? I am leaving on a business trip next week and my auto trany is slipping some. Want to know my options before I set out in case of trouble.

I know you said East of KC but Floor It performance is a DTT installer and is in Lawarance Kansas. Got a learn how to spell that one of these days. He is a member here and goes by Floor It.

If you're going across I-70 one of the best Diesel Shops in the U. S. is TST Products in Columbus, Ind. They are affiliated with ATS Performance Trans out of Denver. Taking I-70 to Indianapolis, and then down I-65 would put you straight into Nashville. TST is about 60 miles south of Indianapolis on I-65. But I don't know if that is the route you intend.

Whichever way you plan to go, you should do some homework before you go. Call the Perf. Trans. vendors. Talk to them all. ATS, Goerends, Dtt, Suncoast. ATS has affiliated shops all over the U. S. --shops which do the ATS rebuild and use the ATS TC & VB. The fact that all of the TOP Diesel Shops in the U. S. use them testifies to the ATS Trans. TST is one. Blumenthal's Heavy Duty, in Oklahoma is another, Sheid's Diesel also is an ATS shop, as is Bellflower Trans out in Cal.

How heavy a load are you going to be carrying/towing?

What year is your truck and how many miles are on it?

The LAST thing you should consider is going on a trip with a bad trans and be forced into getting a stock re-build from some local shop which doesn't see many Dodge/Cummins. If you want to call ATS, their # is 800-949-6002

Robert, I understand about planning. Just have not had time to address the problem. Hope to make the trip without trouble. I am pulling about 4ton not a big load. I have 50K on the truck. The transmission slips from time to time and I have changed fluid and filter in the last 2K This is the second time for a fluid change and I had run Amsoil the first change but went back to Mopar the last time. Things straightened right out. Now we will see. I suppose when a trans goes it is all or nothing , right?

I expect it to go eventually anyway just want to know where to turn when it does. If I am on the road I need to know where the good shops are at. We had living quarters with us.

thanks

When you say it is slipping are you sure it isn't just the TC unlocking and locking?

These Dodges have a bad habit of doing that, and it is annoying but not extremely damaging to the trans. in the short run. If it is the TC unlocking and locking the feel will be different than the TC slipping. Also if it is the TC unlocking it will do it on any grade and when empty, full, towing etc. , while if it is the TC slipping it will tend to do it more on hills while towing or hauling heavier loads.

When a transmission goes bye-bye sometimes it is dramatic and "all or nothing" and sometimes you can limp along quite a ways. Guys have posted here about traveling hundreds of miles with really serious transmission damage--but the old 47RH or RE held together and got them to their destination. But if a shaft breaks or if the TC slips so much that it degrades and sends little bits of TC Clutch material all through the trans, that puts a stop to things right away.

50K is not a lot of miles on one of these trannys, unless you just got a bad one from the factory, or if you are heavily bombed. Also if it is still in warranty you might want to go that route if it goes out. What year is your truck? Also, if you fill out your "signature" we can all see what mods. you have and the other stuff about your truck.

If it were my truck with 50K, and the trans went out, I'd first go to the dealer and let them rebuild it, THEN I'd go to an ATS shop and get an ATS TC & VB!!:D

rrausch:

I have an 02. The slipping is a vibration that I get and yes it is normally on hills or pulling. However it is mostly when the truck is cold. Once it warms up it does not seem to be a bad. I have a temp gauge so I keep an eye on that. The only thing I have done is put in the AFE air cleaner and an EZ on low setting. Good idea about the replacement transmission. My son is a Dodge service rep and he said the rebuild trans they give you are a piece of junk. He was going to go to work for the company that rebuilds them a once time till he saw the facility and the work they trun out. But it sure would get you through till you could get a good one.

Thanks

dgrothusen, my advice is since your not towing a lot of weight, unhook the EZ,this way your much more likely to make it where your going. On the trans debate, IMO any of them is an improvement over stock, but DTT is my choice.

The Vibration sounds like tc shudder. My truck was starting to shudder pretty bad and changing to a new filter and new ATF+3 fluid seems to have fixed it for now. I think your truck calls for atf+4 being an 02. I also intend on going the full DTT route in my truck. And I'll probably let Floor It do it.

yep mcoleman,

I changed fluid and filter and it stopped for a couple k miles then started again. If it is what you say do you think it can cause the trany to just flat quit?

I'm going to jump in here and add this.

To reduce the slipping and or shudder, keep the rpm up. Do not let it pull at any rpm under 1800-1900. Shift it down until you get some speed up.

I doubt it will go suddenly. It is not like a shaft breaking, it will slowly die, slipping more each time you challenge it.

Keep the rpm's up bt locking out od when under 65 mph.
