I have a '94 12 valve 4x4 (204k miles). Early in the morning about 15 min into the drive I get a little jerk in the RPM's. I have a part I bought from the dealer according to my VIN #. It is a Overdrive lockout switch and looks like a couple of doorbells with a 3 wire switch. I believe it may go inside of my transmission.

Should I try it or try process of elimination? It seems to be in the 60-70 Mph range though occasionally at a lower range. Everyday it does it. I notice that if I gun it it will kick the RPM back down... but may go right back out of Overdrive shortly. Can go 80 miles some times and nothing...come back that same 80 miles and will do it. P. S. Not real certain on acronym's so may ask more questions.

Wouldn't own anything else though !!!!!!!!!!

CDixon, try searching under "TPS cleaning" and see what kind of info you will find. I had the same problem this week and remembered reading the posts recommeded above and seem to have fixed my problem. If you have other questions. let us know.

i had all of the same symptoms.

2 new tps's - no fix

cleaned the tps - no fix

new pcm - no fix

new trans temp sensor - you guessed it... ... no fix

new gov press solenoid - no fix

pulled the tps wires out of the loom - voila..... fixed.....

Thanks

Thank you I will try pulling the wires out of the loom and work my way to the tps cleaning if pulling the wires doesnt work.

Again thank you for the info.

Oh by the way... FYI I have a 47rh Transmission. I had my VIN # pulled up and printed out at the dealer. Lots of great info. May want to do that yourself (or am I a little late jumping on the wagon?)

But thanks again!!!! <><

One more thing. Is my TPS going into my Trans line, Top of my transmission or side of my transmission. Is it a two prong plug or three ????? What does "TPS" mean? And if I trace the wires it will go from___ to ___??

Thanks guys this is going to work it sounds like !!!!

CDixon, your TPS is located on the front-left corner of the engine. Looking over the driver side fender, find and follow the throttle cable to its end (will be behind the intake hose). You will also find the end of the cruise cable at the same location (if you have it). There is a black box bolted to the side of the assembly that the cables run too. This is your TPS. It has a three prong cable attached.

If I get you right you're saying it only does this in the morning. There is a temp sender that won't let the trans shift into OD until the fluid is warmed up. Could this be what you're feeling?

I am really appreciating this !!!

It does it more than just in the morning and sometimes not at all though more often than not !

Will try it this evening and let you know !!!!

Thanks... ...

I've found that the hunting out of OD usually occurs only at the speed that you drive at most when the tps is dirty. Squirting electronic cleaner at the tps shaft while working the throttle back and forth has always cleared it up for me.

hey bill, post your engine pic of the port side for this fellow. it may help him locate the tps... ... . thanks... ..... scott.

Thank you !!!!

Listen I really want to thank all of you for helping me out !

illflem it worked ... voila is right. I pulled the wires out yesterday before going home and no more RPM jerks.

I really do appreciate it !!

Although there was one jerk this morning ... some guy in the fast lane had me two blocked @ 40 mph in a 65! Not much you can do about those "jerks". Ha

But drove plenty yesterday evening and for the first time in a long time no RPM variance !!

P. S. Saved the diagram you sent ... much thanks !!!!!!

And Much thanks !!!!!!

Illflem:

I have also noticed that a faulty connection between the brake pedal and the brake light switch, will cause this problem. . I had this problem return and it would go in and out of overdrive when I would hit a bump or touch the side of the brake pedal with my foot. I resolved this by moving the brake light switch closer to the brake pedal. I hope this will help others.

Good Luck

Don

Knowledge is POWER !!!

These are all great to know. Things like this would take a lot of time and $$ to figure out on your own. I've been a member for three days now and it is the best INVESTMENT for the low price of membership. Glad to have the info !!!!!!

My trans was doing same thing. Did all the standard noise fixes including the filter from DTT. No fix. Ended up being the trans temp sensor but I was not getting trans temp light on gauge. 1k ohm resistor fixed it.

This thread is quite a blast from the past. SCosgriff, my problem on my '95 was nearly identical- but I also had a bad TPS. Replacing the TTS with the 1k ohm resistor only eliminated some of the symptoms.
