Today when driving my 2001 Dodge 3500 4x4 with an automatic transmission, it seems like it doesn't shift into 1st gear or overdrive? Seems like it only has 2nd gear and 3rd gear. Any ideas what this would be, or does it sound like it is time for a new transmission?

Thanks,

Brenton

The TCM is seeing a problem thus putting it in a limp mode. You need to scan the TCM for codes. May not be a serious problem. Most likley problems are output speed sensor,or govenor pressure sensor or govenor solenoid issues.

Can a "cheap scan tool" from autozone do what I need, or do I need to have a good scanner? Do I need to park the truck or have it towed to a shop? How bad is it to drive in limp mode? Thanks a bunch guys.

You should be able to cycle the key on-off-on-off-on, (three times) and have any codes read in the odo window. Sometimes it shows a code for this , sometimes not.

Most likely the gov pressure solinoid and sensor on the VB is causing it. It could be the speed sensot on the bottom of the OD case.

every scan tool is different,it wouldn't hurt to try scanning it with any thing you have, let us know what you get.
