I got 107,000 out of mine, bombed, before I got an ATS rebuild. I could have lasted probably 10-20,000 more, if I wanted to be careful, but I didn't want to be careful, and I didn't want my trans to break down and have to settle for a 2nd rate rebuild.

I have an auto in my truck and at 140,000 miles it still shifts good although with the mods i can slip the converter at will. I have done transmission service at approx 36,000 intervals. This truck tows 13,000 lbs. once a month.

I don't think it matters much, AUTO or MANUAL, You see as much or more problems with the MANUALS. And as far as cost go, they are almost a wash. There are 1000's of post about 5th gears failing, input shafts breaking, shift forks breaking, and the ever so popular clutch failure. Add up the repair cost and they are about the same, as well as there life cycle.

There are two variables that comprise nearly 100% of an automatic transmission life. One is the manufacture of the unit, some are great, some are OK and some are junk right out of the box. 90% + are in the OK to great range, so you have pretty good odds that you are OK on count one. The second variable that is super important is the loose nut behing the wheel, you. I know guys that can wreck an anvil with a powderpuff, and I also know guys that can get another 100K miles out of a vehicle that is "worn out". How it is driven is a supermegahuge factor in how long it lasts.

My transmission was fine at 95k

I bought it used at 50k so I have no idea how the previous owner used/abused things.

The torque converter on the other hand was completely shot.

The output (turbine) hub splines were more than half worn.

The lockup clutch material was badly burned. Dave was really surprized the cover wasn't warped, but I would normally get off the power when the clutch slipped.

I used the same logic as rrausch. A little preventative maintenance up front with the products you want versus a panic rebuild on the road with what ever you find.
