I found out why my transmission was downshifting so hard. The mechanic had talked to DC and they told him he may have to add some shims to the overdrive rod. Said the transmission wouldn't have to be removed and that it was going to be about a half day job.
Well, when he got into it today, he called to tell me the thrust washer wasn't even in there and that where the rod moves back and forth had scuffed the parts where it touched. There was no metal in the pan but he said all of the damaged parts were being replaced and the parts that weren't installed at the factory were being added.
I talked to the dealer and they assured me (this is my third truck from them, so I trust them) that if any problems developed, a new transmission would be installed with no argument. The mechanic is pretty confident that we got the problem solved before there was any damage to the transmission other than those worn parts being replaced. He said the wear was barely noticeable but there were scuff marks. Fortunately, most of the miles were highway with very little shifting going on. I get the truck back tomorrow.
