Howdy, I own a 1997 Dodge Ram 2500, 4X4 with HD Auto???? and of course it is equiped with the Cummins Turbo Diesel. My vehicle has 127,000 miles on it with a newly installed Mopar Reconditioned transmission with approximately 8,000 miles on it. I choose the reconditioned transmission because the warranty on it is superior to a new transmissions warranty. The transmission was installed in November. When the transmission was installed I had the dealer install a BD valve body in place of the stock valve body. In retrospect I kind of wish I had changed out the stock torque converter. At the same time I upgraded the cummins engine with a cummins upgrade kit which consisted of a new injection pump and larger injectors which boosted the horsepower to approximately 230 from 195 and increased torque to approximately 600 ft lbs. I installed Spas guages, EGT/Boost and Transmission/rear diff, which have paid for themselves many time over.

After all of the above, I moved from Alaska towing a 30' Holiday Rambler 5th wheel with GCVW of approximately 21000 lbs. The trip was uneventful with the exception of the transmission temperature hitting 260 during one 5 mile stretch going uphill in Canada. I ended up in Louisville, KY and put approximately 4500 miles on the reconditioned transmission during that trip.

Lately I've noticed and can hear an intermittent sound coming from what I believe is the transmission. The sound occurs during acceleration and its intensity is relative to the amount of throttle I apply to it. Additionally I notice a subtle lack of performance while this sound is occurring. The sound is hard to describe but I'll make an attempt at it. It's a low whining sound which increases in intensity if I step on the gas. What's odd is at the next stop light the trans will operate correctly. Acceleration is better and no noise. Once the malfunction starts it pretty much continues off and on, mostly on. This is an everyday occurance now and appears to be less of a problem when the transmission is cold. I'm not experiencing abnormal trans temps.

I would appreciate any help or advice concerning this problem.

Thank You, R. Biggs
