Help! They wrecked my truck

I had the transmission oil changed yesterday in the truck. At 32,666 miles the oil looked real good with just very few particles on the magnet which he said was normal. I put the fluid that it calls for back in and now it seems like it is smoother between the gears. I had no trouble before and just though it was a good idea to change with the towing and hauling I do. We added the fast oil coolers and took about 5 1/2 quarts. I am very happy thus far.

Changed mine too

Well being so warm out tonight I got ambitious and changed my transmission oil. First time, at 51,280 miles. After looking at the oil I should have done it MUCH sooner! Anyone who is past 30k or so should seriously consider changing the transmission oil. Mine was pretty dark and VERY metallic in appearance.

I filled mine with Amsoil 5W30 since some have gone with that and I had it on hand. I haven't driven it yet so cannot comment on drivability.

I did not see a magnet on my fill plug, just a flat smooth surface on the back side. Maybe it fell off and it's in my transmission somewhere?

It took about 4. 5 quarts to refill my trans.

We took off both pto covers and the magnet was laying in the bottom of the transmission. It was about the size of an ole time matchbox but lots thinner. about an inch by inch and a half I reckon.

You guys have spurred me to action. I have just over 63k on my 01 ETH w/o changing the transmission fluid. Could you explain the procedure, especially draining it. Do you remove the pto cover or pull the 17mm Allen hex head. Conversely what hole do you refill it through and how much does it hold. I know I can check the manual for capacity, I just thought someone might know off the top of their head. Thanks in advance. Oh, does one need any new gaskets or just replacement fluid.

wyosteve ~ To drain remove bottom bolt on drivers side PTO. After drain remove both PTO (my suggestion) and clean out inside real well with lint free cloths. No gaskets use gasket sealer I used the black from NAPA. the fill through the 17mm Allen hex head. Hope this helps by the way the magnet scared me because at first I thought it was a broken part of the transmission!!! Good look. :D

I never did take either PTO cover off, just let it drain out the holes. Then I used my electric suction pump and stuck the hose in the fill port and suctioned another 3-4 cups of lube out. I was limited on time, next time I'll remove the cover.

It took about 4. 5 quarts to refill mine, through the fill port which requires the 17mm allen socket. I picked mine up at NAPA.

Now that I've driven about 50 miles running around town today I think it shifts a little better. It was worse this AM but I think it needed to get the new stuff worked thru the gears :)

Crunch time

Vaughn,

You might have problem with that oil. I experienced a "Crunch" when shifting after using Amsoil. Don't get me wrong, I like Amsoil, but not in the 6 speed. The OEM oil works best IMO.
