I'm going to change out my transmission oil and thought I would put in a drain valve in the pan. Does one need to weld this in or do the o-rings work well enough? If one does choose to weld it in what type of welding procedure. . tig, mig, etc. ?

Thanks everyone!!

David

I would weld, I think the pan is aluminum... . I changed mine to a double deep maghitech ( or however they spell it ) seems to work well and it has a drain

Changed fluid in mine a week or so ago. The pan is steel. I have installed drains in several vehicles in past including the 99 I had. I cut a 1/4" threaded pipe coupling off and brazed it in. Never had a leak. bg

Get one of the B&M drain pug kits that install to hole drilled in the pan side then replace the washers with copper ones and your good.

Respectfully disagree. I installed one of them and had nothing but problems with it sealing. It leaked from day one.

Now, maybe copper washers would have solved the problem, but I just thought it was a cheesy design.

Finally saved up the scratch and went with a PML pan. Works real well.

Yep, I did that with several Chevys with THM400 transmissions years ago. Like you I never had a leak.

If I had to do it all over again, I would probably go with the new Goerend pan instead of the Mag-Hytec I have now. I cannot stand the chincy drain plug on the Mags.

A Derale pan is nice if thats your choice. The instructions don't tell you but one should understand that without a good seal they will leak. A small bead of high temp RTV on the threads where they go thru the pan and a high quality gasket sealer on the washers and it won't leak. You will have to work to ever take it apart and remove it. ;)

whats wrong with the plug... seems fine too me???

Metal plug into aluminum threads, bad news. The plug seizes and strips the hex out trying to loosen it. Liberal use of anti-seize is reccomended or you have a problem.

What he said, plus I use the Black Mopar ATF proof RTV when I do mine.

I also ditch the cheesy o-ring on the drain plug itself and replace that with a copper washer as well, I don't like the o-ring trying to s**t itself out when you are tightening the plug.

No leaks if you do that.

Mike. :)

Yeah, thats the cheesiest part of it. Lasted one change so went to my selection of good o-rings and got the right one. Five changes since with no issues. :)

Wrong guy. I did the PML. Not as fancy as the Mag Hytec but I'm not getting fancy with the temp probe and all that. Don't need the shiny stuff, just functional.

The B&M plug kit came with el-cheapo nylon washers if I remember. Had to crank it down so far to get it to seal that it destroyed the washers.

I'll have to remember to get a copper one for the PML when I change the fluid next.

RTV is a good idea too. Thanks -

You can also use a 1/2 20 nut welded to the pan and use a matching engine drain plug. very clean look and price can not be beat
