What is the difference/benefits of the multitude of tranmission pans?

Are the "diesel" pans worth the diesel price?

Why not use a 727 pan that isn't black and has a diesel stamp on it for half the price? Are they thicker to add rigidity?

Does the pan really add some needed rigidity?

Just curious. I am looking for a deep pan for my 94 and the difference in price makes me wonder if there is something magic with these pans. Or if I really need one. I kind of like the welded aluminum pans but they don't seem to have much use in the diesel market.

Thanks for the replies.

I use a TCI 128000 (about $130 when I bought it now it's $169 at summit).
It is thick cast Aluminum and holds 2 extra qts of fluid. Also has a magnetic tipped drain plug.

I've had it for about 3 years and 130K miles.

I see that Summit racing now sells a TCI 128010 cast Aluminum pan that is powder coated (in the diesel truck section) for $275. Don't know for sure but it looks to be the same pan TCI has sold for years with only powder coat added.

I shoped around and ended upwith the mag one and it is very thick and strong. It will deffinaly help ridgity of the transmission more than the cheaper one.

It's a bit tricky because while the trans uses the bolt pattern of the 727, the depth it a bit different between models.

A stock 727 pan is very shallow, like almost flush with the bottom of the trans.

While our diesel pans, have a 2-3" drop. The RH is a bit shallower and the RE is a bit deeper I believe.

So what is considered a "deep" pan for a 727 is a stock pan for our diesels.

As for the very expensive Mag Hytec, vs the cheaper models, in my opinion, the all do the job the same.

I am happy with the PML pan I have. On of the TDR members is a dealer for PML and gives a great discount for us. Forget the username though.
