Yes you can, but I think you will get a more accurate reading in the pan. I tried it for a while on my motor home. It is a Ford C6, and the port is high on the case. It ran 220-230 there, but about 190-200 in the pan.

wouldn't you want to read the higher temp for the gauge? like getting the trans fluid temp before the trans fluid cooler to show you what is the hottest it is operating at?
