Ok you guys, I like to read these threads because a lot of you are very knowledgeable and give good/useful info. Just had my 48RE transmission rebuilt last fall (2nd time-full rebuild). I am not a mechanic so I can't give a lot of description other than a rebuilt (heavy duty?) torque converter, bands, overdrive sprag? & bearing & plate, boost valve cover, 3-4 lockup solenoid/governor, solenoid/transducer, pressure regulator valve, switching valve and direct drum. These are all from my invoice of $2,890. This was done approx 5K miles ago. I have only pulled the trailer once in that time, about 100 miles.

Everything seemed great, I had just been thinking how good the transmission was feeling and shifting.

Last saturday I was at my daughter's house, had backed into the driveway. When I left to go home, I remembered that I had left something there. Turned around and went back about 1 mile, went to back into the driveway again and NO REVERSE whatsoever. Just like that it was gone, no indication of any problem. Just sat there and revved up. Was able to drive it home, but would not shift above 2nd gear (4 spd auto).

Good thing is that I have a one year warranty on the rebuild, so it will get fixed, once he can get to it.

My questions are, what could have caused this? Do you think I have a lemon transmission? Even after the rebuild? The guy who rebuilt it is very well recommended and was very conscientious but I'm not sure if he has done many heavy duty trucks. I have seen notes on here about real heavy duty transmissions, should I have gone that route or can mine be rebuilt to be real heavy duty? And if so what do I need to do to make sure it gets done that way. Can I do something now that will give me better results and what additional would it cost me?

I know, long story!! But I wanted to get as much info in here as I could. Any and all suggestions welcome.

Assuming the trans is full of fluid, the most common problem when you loose reverse and drive at the same time lik that is the direct clutch pack has failed for some reason. Why is the big question and it will have to be disassembled to see that.

It could be something simple that was missed on the previous builds like a bad clutch piston or a torn seal from the last rebuild. There are upgraded seals for both clutch packs that need to be used. It could also be a bad case and there is a problem in the direct clutch apply circuit that has burned the clutches. Just a couple things that I have seen but there are more.

What you posted from the invoice sounds right if the parts were bad. Some of them seem uneccessary but I wasn't looking at them so will reserve judgement. I would have made sure a shift kit went in, billet pistons in both servos and accumulator, plus upgrade front band strut and anchors, replace rear bearing support along with the sprag clutch.

Doesn't sound like you have used it hard so my guess was something was missed on the rebuld that has now failed. If you have warranty use it and push for some better parts in certain areas if the failure cause warrants it.

Good luck. :)

The transmission guy drove it and, like you said, he thinks it might be something to do with the clutch. Won't really know till he gets it apart which won't be till sometime next week. Thanks for the reply.

Hope it doesn't rain because I will be riding the motorcycle to work.
