Hey guys,

I think i have a transmission problem but iam not totally sure. Hopefully somebody can help me out. I have a 1996 Dodge 2500 turbo diesel with a automatic transmission (47re) and when it downshifts from 3rd to 2nd it makes a awful clunk sound. I also notice when it upshifts from 2nd to 3rd it is a harsh engagement, more then the other shifting points. If anybody has any ideas of what can be wrong that would be great.

Thanks.

Coupple of things will influence the shift like that. The TV cable may need adjusting to get the balance needed for shifting. You can try adjusting it and see if it makes a difference.

The other piece of the puzzle is the governor pressure solenoid. The OE piece is less than adequate and will get dirty and hang causing both of your symptoms. Frequently the gov solenoid is the culprit in these cases.

The TV cabel i take it is the throttle valve cable adjustment. Do you guys know if i scan my truck if a transmission code would be present. My service engine light is not on, but the way the transmission is acting you would think you would have a tranmission trouble code?

Hey cerberusiam, thank you for your help!!

Normally don't throw a code for the governor sticking, just going beyond parameters. Might have a code in the TCM if it recognizes a problem but those trucks did not have a lot of diagnostics on the transmission.
