Hi All,

I have a 91. 5 250 4x4 with 266k on it. I noticed lately that if the truck has been sitting awhile and I put it in reverse it takes a little throttle to get moving. Does it sound like its time for a fluid and filter change? Or could this be the prelude to something more costly?

A common aliment with the borgwarner 727 family of trannies is the leak back that will manifest just as you describe. Give the transmission a second to prime and it is helpful to shift into drive and back to reverse, even twice if the truck has been sitting a while. What you want to avoid is to force the truck to move with air in the system as this will allow the clutch packs to be less than full locked thus forcing slippage. My automatics do this and that is the remedy I have used. One has close to 300k and the other has 120k.

Now, that said, you may have greater problems that you can't avoid. Hope not, but try this first. I have read that there are aftermarket governor bodies that address that problem. I have no experience with those.

It`s probably just the converter draining back. There are modified manual valves (usually comes with a shift kit, i. e. Trans-go) that put and end to this. The cheepo way out is to simply idle the thing in neutral for about 20 seconds or so, this will fill the converter and no slipperoo.

I second the idle in neutral, when the transmission is in neutral the fluid circulates faster than any other position, this will purge the air from the hydraulic system the fastest.
