My '03 4WD HO with 6 speed NV5600 TM has been "shifting funny". It's an intermittent problem and I know when I take it to the dealer, they will not be able to duplicate it. It started off doing it about once a week, now it's probably once a day. My wife just took it to lunch and she thought she was going to be stranded because it did it 3 or 4 times in a row.

Of course, I always start out in 2nd, and it seems like it's usually on the first shift between 2nd and 3rd that the shift doesn't happen immediately when I let the clutch out. In fact, it seems like it may take it about a second or so to engage, then it happens all at once, like I popped the clutch. Then you will hear a kind of clunk like it shifted all at once.

Truck has about 85,000 miles on it. Not BOMBed at all. Straight up 5. 9L HO.

Any ideas??? Does the 100,000 mile powertrain warranty cover the transmission too?

Doesn't sound like a transmission problem, sounds like the clutch is hanging up after you release the pedal. Sliding surfaces sticky between throwout bearing and output bearing housing of transmission? Or clutch hub?

Is that something I can access without major surgery? Is it on the side of the transmission? To be honest, I haven't looked under there in a while and it was not something I ever really paid much attention to before.

Sounds like a possible fluid issue to me... have you changed the fluid lately???

Mine will not shift nicely if the fluid has any amount of miles on it... based on my UOA of Amsoil MTF, this transmission shears fluid pretty good.

The best way is to pull the transmission and look at all the sliding sufaces. I don't know if there is an inspection plate that can be removed to try to get a drop or two of oil on the shaft. It also wouldn't hurt to take a good look at the clutch master and slave cylinders to make sure something isn't wrong there as well. The transmission fluid would not have anything to do with your problem. As I understood your first post, the clutch engages suddenly after you have the transmission in third gear and have removed your foot from the clutch pedal.

I reread it, somewhere I had gotten it that was just difficult to place into gear... it does sound like a throw-out bearing hanging up...

isnt there any graese fittings for the throw out bearing. if so that should have been done every LOF. if not you might want to think about the slave cylinder.
to dp that u have to pull the trans. if i remember correcetly

OK, new symptom. This weekend, had a bed about half full of gravel, backing up a steep bank in 4L. Truck started popping really bad coming from somewhere underneath. My wife said it sounded like it was coming from the center of the truck. It felt like something was slipping when it was popping, like it wasn't moving as much as it should have. It popped faster when I revved the engine slightly. I put it in 4H and it still did it. In both forward and reverse. Put it in 2H and it still did it until I got off the hill. Then I couldn't get it to do it again when I was unloaded, but I didn't really get on it too hard, because I was 2 hours from home and didn't want to pay a tow bill. Could this still go along with the throw out bearing? Anybody out there from central KY that knows a good transmission shop?
