Not good! My '99 3500 5-speed transmission is still in 5th gear, but the shifter is in neutral!!

Lucky for me I was turning into the driveway when this happened. I clutched and downshifted, but the shifter went into neutral and the transmission stayed in 5th gear! Is there any way to get the transmission in neutral without pulling it? Can I get the shift cover off without pulling the transmission? Is it possible to pull a PTO cover or something and slip the thing in neutral? It would be nice to now it is posible before I scatter junk everywhere and cannot do it.

I plan on putting the truck in the local shop for some repairs, but am a long way from there with the truck stuck in 5th gear. Any help would be appreciated.

Anybody??

Does anyone know the answers to my questions?

Most important, is there room to pull the shift cover with transmission in place?

John, you cant remove the shifter plate on the NV4500 without pulling the trans out of the truck. You could if you wanted to hack your floor up. However all the shifting is located in the top of trans so opening up the PTO covers wont net you any results. I would guess you either have a worn out shift plate or a broken 5th gear collar in the rear housing. I would remove the T case and take off the 5th gear housing before removing the trans completely.

What I Found, thanks CSnyder!

Took CSnyder's advice and pulled the fifth gear housing. No shifter problem. The fifth gear was worn on the ID and binding while trying to shift. Replaced fifth gear and reinstalled. Works great! Also installed a rear transfer case seal and the bad reverse light switch while I was under there.

Thanks again to CSnyder for the reply. I love this forum!
