A buddy of mine is having problems with his 98. 5 one ton. I keep trying to convince him to join TDR. Maybe this will help. The truck has 176,000 miles on it. He bought it used and not very well maintained. The transmission shifts very erradically . When travelling at about 20 to 30 mph and accellerating it shifts up and down between 1st and 2nd and with overdrive off. At 30 to 35 mph and overdrive off and then up to about 45 it does the same thing. With overdrive on and 35 to 45mph it does the same as it does between 20 and 30mph but shifts between 2nd and third. All this is while he has a fairly heavy camper on truck. Then while accelerating at 55 to 60mph in a pull the rpms increase while the mph decreases without shifting down. I told him it sounds like he's got a couple of problems. One is valve body and other is torque converter slippage. I helped him service transmission about a year ago . Fluid was brown and burned and bands were way out of adjustment. And that seemed to help it for awhile but now is back into old mode. He doesn't drive it a lot and doesn't want to spend a lot of money . Think maybe just a rebuilt stock trans would be ok or there something else we can do to help his existing transmission. Thanks for your help. Brett

Try the suncoast rewire first. Worst case you prevented a future problem from happening and you're out twenty minutes of your time and a couple of bucks. Best case, the torque converter problem will be... SOLVED. Good luck.

Brett, run the codes. There are two sensors in transmission that may need to be replaced. I can't remember what they are but my 01 had a similar problem. I replaced both sensors and filter. Problem solved.
