Diesel Spill

Do I have a limited slip

Hi All, I have been asked over and over again the same question from other drivers on the street, with the same truck as ours about the automatic transmission's in the turbo diesel. I guess their must be a problem with them that I dont know about,I have had no problems with mine 70,000 miles and working fine. I pull a load 5days a week in my work and it seems fine. One guy with a 99 model said that he had his transmission replaced after just 7000 miles? My truck is a 98. 5 model and I put amsoil synthetic transmission fluid in at 30,000,maybe thats the difference I dont know. Maybe someone out there knows better about this problem and can inform me so I can pass it along. TIA:confused:

Mine has 60K and doing fine... ... ..... but then again I installed an Edge Comp last week, BILL... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ...

After 12 months on this truck with the auto transmission having a whoping 11K mikes. I have not had any problems other than some TC slippage with the power enhancements. Now with the DTT stuff I have no slippage. Truck gets used basically for towing and some around town stuff. I have heard that auto's are not reliable. that is why my last truck had a five speed. but then my knees went south so I had to get the auto for comfort reasons. the auto does suck up alot of power. that and that its hard to control when it shifts makes it hard to get used too. But so far it seems very capable.

the reason the first 2 guys are doing good is STOCK power from what i can read in their sigs ... the dodge trans will live a long life , if its well taken care of and built properly the first time around , turn up the power and all bets are off ...

transmissions

i have a 01. 5 that is bone stock relating to power enhancements. frankly, i don't care to be my own warranty station. the truck has about 13,000 miles. since it had about 3,000 miles the transmission would have delayed engagement. if i leave the truck sit for more that 3 days and you startup and go to leave the rpm's come up but truck sits still. sounds like converter isdraining down ?? my friendly 5 screwup dealer gave me a dc sheet that says thats normal. i just got off the phone requesting an appointment with the regional factory rep. we shall see bruce

For what is it worth, my 46RH would do the delayed engagement thing if it sat several days, it ran fine for 100,000 + hard miles. The 47RE is a kissing cousin.

its best to always let the trans to warm up a little before use. Mine has some drainback also. I talked with DTT and they say thats normal and it will not hurt the transmission IF you let it warm up (get the fluids through it). They also mentioned to put the truck in neutral after you start it and this will run the fluid quicker. (transmission pumps 1. 2 GPM in park and 2. 8 GPM in neutral).

Texas Diesel, How did you get the 2 low?

114k and not a problem. Been BOMB'ed for 60 to 70k. Normal service and don't be stupid, you should have lots of trouble free miles.

Bruce,

That's normal for a Torque Flite transmission. My Dad's '63 Plymouth factory hot rod did the same thing. Especially if it was parked with the nose up over night. The torque converter drains overnight and takes a few seconds to refill. Just let it idle in N for a little while when you first start it. In a stock transmission idleing in P will not fill the TC. Then you should be good for the day.

Tom C, I did the 2-low myself following instructions I got from someone here on the TDR. Works great, email me if you need more info.

delayed engagement

thanks for the info. fred, regarding your question. i live in sw florida so cold weather isn't an issue. if i let the truck idle 5 to 10 seconds it's usually ok. the only time ithappens is when the truck sits 3 or more days and i want to leave immediately after starting. another interesting suggestion was to park front end uphill and compare to reverse. i will try that. again, thanks bruce

for what it's worth

My original transmission went 98,000 miles. With service every 20,000, a VA box since about 20,000 miles and a blue box set at 30% since 50,000, along with a BD pressure lock. I was, however cautious to only use the blue box for short burst when passing and merging and never let it shift while the box was on.

At 98,000 my second gear band finally broke. I did the right thing and did away with the pressure lock and went with a DTT 91% converter and 80 PSI valve body, 5 clutch pack and a complete rebuild to Bill K. specs. There is now absolutely no comparison with the stocker ... ... . I should have done this a long time ago.

I now feel comfortable leaving the box on 30% at all times, unless it is raining.

The only draw back is that now I feel a need for a some fuel lift pump ugrades to get ready for DD3's.

Where does this all end.

John
